A stray female feline and her kitten
Are given refuge at a shelter for awhile
But there are far too many unwanted pets
Euthanasia scheduled for both mother and child
Just down the road about twenty miles or so
A skunk is killed while crossing the dark highway
Her tiny child is still weaning and now all alone
A kind hearted soul takes it to the shelter right away
The baby skunk needs a surrogate mother to survive
The mother cat needs a reprieve from death row
She quickly accepts the baby skunk as her own
Thrilling all the dedicated shelter workers so
The mother cat and her kitten
Are now allowed to live
Because of this life-sustaining gesture
An unwanted critter so willingly gives
Soon the kitten and the baby skunk
Form a deep deep mystical bond
They now wean and play together
Of each other they are very fond
I often wonder why most animals are far more willing
To help each other and provide life’s second chances
Than we humans ever seem willing to do for each other
But in every story like this my heart truly dances
There is probably a loving caring creature
At a shelter just down the road from your home
That is desperately hoping for a second chance
That is scheduled to die soon – all alone
If you cannot adopt an animal yourself
Please consider if a few dollars you could give
Animal shelters desperately need funds for food
And your donation just might help another live
Because the shelter doesn't keep wild animals, a member of ARK, (Animal Rehabilitation Keep) a wild animal rescue group, has taken not only the skunk, but the mother cat and her kitten, as well.
After the skunk is weaned, ARK will release it into the wild, and will also hopefully find a home for the momma cat and her baby.
Second chances in life often come about when you least expect them; and from some very unusual sources.
Animals and nature can teach us many things, if we are only willing to listen.

This is so touching! I love animals and I do think that we can learn from all of God's creatures. I do give to our local animal shelter regularly (I'm on their mailing list) and I have adopted pets through animal shelters. Thank you for sharing your talent in this beautiful, inspiring message!

Her mom took in all 6 kids and raised them as her own... along with her own 3 kids. They were even on Oprah!

Animals can often teach us lessons. They are supposed to be
lesser creatures without a thinking mind, but so often they far
surpass the so-called "intellectuals" in our universe.
I had a hen that mothered an orphan duck. She would virtually go
crazy every time the duckling headed for the pond, and cluck loudly
all the time the little critter was swimming. When he came out of
the water, shook himself off, and waddled towards her...she would
literally tremble covering him until he dried off. That was funny
to watch!
You sure know how to tug at the heartstrings, I need to keep away from animal shelters, since I have more than many people have in a lifetime (smiles) Your poetry says it all, animals are so accepting :)

Numerous baby racoons, squirrels, opposums, bobcat kittens, yes, yes even skunks. Orphaned piglets, goats, fawns, we nursed them until they were able to find their own way and then we released them. Well, most of them. The pigs and goats weren't released, but the actual wild animals were.
My Father was a nature addict...I think maybe it's through his eyes that I honestly see the world so differently.
When I visit your Den...I also see a bit of him here.
I'm glad the Mother Cat and kitten got a needed reprieve, I'm also glad the baby skunk will live.
