Poem Artwork

Can Halloween Be Far Behind?

“While I nodded, nearly napping,

Suddenly there came a tapping,

As if someone gently rapping,

Rapping at my chamber door…”

                            Edgar Allan Poe,

                            From The Raven

My spouse purchased a helium balloon

For my August birthday celebration

It had a very comical Happy Face

Which filled everyone with elation

Several days after my birthday

It broke loose from its string

And for the next month or so

Strange phenomena it did bring

It deviously began following us

It delighted in frightening our pets

We never knew where it would pop up

And this weird tale amazes me yet

It would silently glide and wander

From room to room and down the halls

It seemed to delight in following us

And at first I was thoroughly enthralled

When I would awaken in the night

To use one of our bathroom facilities

I’d often find it gazing back at me

Through the shadowy mirrors with glee

When we would head out to the back patio

It was soon staring at us through our screen door

Eventually both my wife and my pets

Couldn’t stand its strange antics anymore

They were really beginning to freak out

They all wanted it gone from our home

It seemed to delight in its sneak attacks

And throughout our home it would roam

One moment it was in the basement

The next minute it would be in the attic

At night it often visited the bathrooms

Truly adding to their horrifying panic

I actually thought this was quite hilarious

Until the balloon’s color started to turn black

Suddenly it had an ugly demonic look

As it made its weird silent sneak attacks

Several terrifying days ago with a broom

My spouse chased it away from our home

It seemed to be smiling quite demonically

As east toward the city it soared and roamed

I’m guessing that it will soon appear

Outside a window of some gigantic high rise

And when a tenant pulls back her drapes

Oh my - what a ghastly terrifying surprise

Happy Halloween, Everyone

And Be Very Careful Out There

You just never know who’s watching you

It might even be a demonic balloon – I swear

And my spouse’s next birthday

Is coming up soon

Instead of fragrant red roses

I might get her a dozen balloons!

Dear Ed,

Well.... stranger things have been known to happen.... NOT. Delightful sense of adventure with you Mr. Kostro, an imagination second to none, absolutely loved it.... oh by the way... did I tell you that the other day as I drew my curtains..... OMG yes!!! it was... that demonic black balloon of yours... he now follows me around my house ... hee hee. Happy Halloween to you too, and buy your wife the roses ... otherwise he (black demonic balloon) may just find his way back to you....

warm hugs
Elga

You, Mr. Kostro, are an IMP! a RASCAL! and my new and, perhaps, permanent, definition of the word DELIGHTFUL! I have no doubt you would go to a royal ball, bow, grinning, and whip a snake out of your tuxeco pocket! Oh, to be there and watch! (giggle)

You make me feel absolutely credible! hehe... katy xox.

(((ed)))

you always manage to find yourself in the middle of a mess, don't you? LOL

life around your household is not boring, i can tell--good for you!

i love the write and the pic--but feel sorry for the pets (make sure they don't chew on the string or balloons, they can choke or get it wrapped somehow around their breating passages or necks)

(((HUGS))) and love, karla. :)

Ed, I'm like your wife..that balloon would have had to go! But if I may? I would suggest that you steer away from that balloon boquet for your wife's birthday...
I hear it gets really cool in those dog houses in the Winter time!
Yes Halloween is coming soon! Hope it's a happy and safe one for all!
