Ever go to a sale
And the prices are so good
You can’t buy just one?
I just returned from a road trip
In which I helped transport
A severely abused Rottweiler in Kansas City,
To his new loving home in Cleveland, Ohio.
I love Happy Endings;
They are so rare these days,
Especially for some types of dogs.
Unfortunately, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Bull Terriers, and several other large powerful breeds of dogs are being vilified in our country today. Many municipalities now want to ban them; many animal shelters refuse to adopt them out; many insurance companies refuse to insure their owners; and, even worse, many police officers, in true fear for their lives, now shoot them on sight.
No dog is born inherently vicious, evil, or mean. Vicious evil people make them so. These large powerful dogs are the preferred choice of drug dealers, gang members, and property owners across America who often beat, starve, and abuse them mercilessly in an effort to make them vicious; and in an effort to protect their drugs, turf, or property. They also often make these dogs engage in extremely cruel and bloody dog fights to the death for cash.
Yet, Rottweilers regularly rack up high scores in obedience trials. They are often used as service dogs for handicapped people confined to wheelchairs. They also do stellar work for many police departments; and these same dogs that are trained to attack ‘bad guys’ gently meet and greet schoolchildren in ‘Officer Friendly’ programs across the country.
And they are loving, devoted, affectionate pets for many families with young children.
Rottweilers are good at these things because they are smart, versatile, highly trainable, loyal, loving, brave, and oh-so-willing to please the people who are kind to them.
But in the hands of the wrong people, a Rottweiler, or any large powerful dog, of any breed, can become a terrifying menace.
Please don't join in current efforts to blame, or ban, an entire breed of dog for the actions of a few that were turned mean; blame the vicious human beings abusing these dogs.
Laws need to be changed to severely punish these animal abusers; not their innocent canine victims.

I bow and will always do so, to the huge education you've brought to the public through your AD site... and elsewhere. You ARE making a difference... every time you post, you are the consummate "resident" here for wonderful poetry, hilarious laughter, and all the information you bring to these masses. Bless you, dear heart... katy xox.

I grew up with dogs, one of which was a pure Doberman that my brother named Sula after a character out of one of Tony Morrison's novels. My dad had no trouble when he walked her down Paris Avenue. Full grown men would cross to the other side of the street when they saw him coming with Sula, but she was one of the most gentle dogs we'd ever had.
It's mean people who make mean dogs.
Love that picture, Ed. Thank you for posting.
I have a Rotweiller story for you.......
I worked on the last census.....so of course I had to go house to house. Normally I would park as close to the house as possible, and I live in the mountains (sorta) and some properties have very long driveways.......well once.....just once I parked at the end of a long driveway....and hoofed it.....get to the house.......who comes around the corner (they had the invisible fence I didn't see the sign!) but a snarling Rotweiller....Now I have had dogs most of my life, and I panicked for a second.........then I started baby talking to the dog!!!
ohhhhhhhh poor little thing......ohhhhhhhh they left you all alone......such a good boy.......blah blah blah.......in the sweetest, most comforting voice I had.......this dog was crying when I left.......followed me to the car......he wanted love....he turned to total mush.......
When I went back to the house, to interview the owners.......they dog was so happy to see me.....(we were old friends lol) and the owners were shocked!!!
They say music soothes the savage beast.......well so does alittle TLC! lol.........pax A
He's so large he can close his mouth around the top of my leg. He'd not hurt a fly intentionally but when he wants to play...he doesn't take no for an answer.
He's baled through the plateglass window more than once to get inside to play with her grandkids. Luckily he's never been hurt doing so..nor the kids either.
He's a big old brute but a great pet!
Hope your plea for these animals works!
