Poem Artwork

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf

Meeting with President Bush at the White House,

Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Washington.

“I am very pleased with his efforts,” said the President.

Wanted: Dead or Alive

But Now, Who Will Look For Him?

Our Ally Withdraws

Pakistan is decreasing its role in the still-unsuccessful hunt for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden by withdrawing its army from the region where the terrorist mastermind is still believed to be hiding by most military intelligence analysts.

The architect of the Sept. 11 attacks against the United States, bin Laden has been on the loose since U.S. forces invaded Afghanistan in October 2001.

President Bush characterized Musharraf as "a determined leader to bring to justice not only people like Osama bin Laden but to bring to justice those would inflict harm and pain on his own people. ... I am very pleased with his efforts.  His army has suffered casualties, and for that we want to thank their loved ones for the sacrifice that their family has made," Bush said.

U.S. officials had praised Pakistan for its operations around Wana, the main town of the lawless and fiercely autonomous Waziristan region. Heavy resistance this year led to increased speculation that another high-profile fugitive - bin Laden's first deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri - was finally cornered.

But Pakistani commanders now say they saw no sign of bin Laden or of al-Zawahri.

So Pakistan is withdrawing thousands of its troops from the tense tribal region near Afghanistan. The decision to pull back comes after several costly military operations against bin Laden's al-Qaida organization and its supporters in recent months.

Between 7,000 and 8,000 Pakistani forces had been deployed in the eastern reaches of the rugged mountainous region. U.S. military forces numbering less than 18,000 remain on the western Afghanistan side in hopes of capturing or killing any al-Qaida operatives crossing the border.

Neither President Bush nor General Musharraf publicly mentioned Washington's concerns over Musharraf's backtracking on another pledge to relinquish his military post.

The general, who seized power in Pakistan in a coup in 1999, had pledged in December 2003 to relinquish his army position as part of a commitment to civilian rule and democracy. His government pushed through a law this year, however, to allow him to keep his separate military role.

This law has caused some concern that Pakistan is not progressing towards democracy as quickly as the U.S. had hoped.

But U.S. officials are also mindful of the need to avoid upsetting Pakistan's internal politics, especially because of reports of a pending deal for the United States to sell military surveillance airplanes, anti-tank missiles, and other weapons worth more than $1 Billion to Pakistan.

While a healthy looking bin Laden has appeared recently on videotapes, U.S. officials have sought to down play his significance in the broader anti-terror battle - a shift from the days immediately following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Four days after the strikes, President Bush declared that bin Laden would be "sorely mistaken" to think he could hide from the United States. Days later, the President drew upon the "Wanted: Dead or Alive" saying from the American West when asked about his wishes for bin Laden.

Today, President Bush rarely mentions Terrorist Leader Osama bin Laden at all.

There were at last report and this was when Timothy McVeigh bombed the building in Oklahoma City over 100,000 known terrorists. It would not surprise me to find that Bin Laden is either in Canada or the United States. From some of the email that I got I would say that probability is great.

Keep up the good work, Ed... keep us questioning, keep us alert to the double-dealing and fancy footwork of the powers that be... and keep us aware of what is ACTUALLY happening - because, I freely admit, that I don't know a thing, when it comes down to it... guess that's how our leaders get away with so much - because I probably represent a dippy majority who are more concerned with what's on telly tonight... (actually, I never get around to watching a thing - news included - but you know what I mean!). Piddles on the case as usual!! I KNEW you were a bloodhound! LOL Komfortzone Kate xx

Yeah, that Osama sure is one slippery fellow. Maybe 'cause he's so damned skinny. They should've just kept his relatives over here when they had them and nailed down the son of a bi-, er, I mean, the man's location. That's the way the good fellas here in Jersey do it. "Hey, Angelo! Find Skinny Vinny! We got business to settle. Grab his fat cousin first, eh, er, what's that kid's name? Uh? Tony! Yeah, Tony over at Lenny's in Newark. And don't let him back talk you none neither or slip to his Uncle Fazzio in Miami! Him 'n Skinny Vinny's on like glue."

"On it, boss. All his cousins know where that jerk off is."

I apologize to my Italian friends for making this bad Jersey jest. ;-)

Keep standing, Ed.

Doesn’t it just upset you that our sitting President has made those statements? It surely did and does me. I would hope that his burning resolve to bring Justice for the families and our country, to those responsible for 9-11 hasn’t waned. If he wants the American people to be fully supportive of his efforts to capture everyone who was involved, he better pick up the pace and prove it. Grant it, the world is a large place and to find one person is a daunting challenge to say the least, but again, I do believe those who are seeking to find him, remain committed to the task at hand. Is he or isn’t he one of the most important figures we need to capture? I believe he is definitely in the top three. Who knows, maybe well invade Pakistan next, and do it ourselves if need be. As it has been said more than once, politics makes strange bedfellows. Ed, it’s a great article, and up to your usual high standards and convictions, which I do admire. Take good care and be well.

...except when we all saw Bush on video saying he, Bush, 'hardly thinks of Bin Laden at all...' ( I believe him)

ON 9/11 AMERICANS STOOD TOGETHER, CALLING FOR WAR AGAINST OUR ATTACKERS!

We didn't say 'oh, no... not war... we want peace!' NO! We KNEW the enemy: Osama/al-Qaida! Flags flew from EVERY house, apt. business! WE WERE A UNIFIED NATION! We stood behind a president who belonged to ALL OF US! We were not Dems or Repub's... WE WERE AMERICANS! An immense sense of pride came from knowing that we had the best military in the world... capable of bringing us safety and peace!

Then, Iraq... and Ossama/al-Qaida, 3 years later, continue to taunt us, to plot against us, to threaten our beloved country.

And our common enemy seems to be our fellow Americans. Clever way to get our 'eye off the ball'... wouldn't you say? I have asked those who support this invasion to convince me that this is the right thing to be doing. They prefer to call me "peacenik" "socialist" and UN-Patriotic. Thank you for reminding us what the "ball" is... I, for one, am keeping my 'eye on it'...

... and I'm STILL calling for WAR against our attackers... but today, that's like 'blowin' in the wind'... Thanks, Ed... katy xox.
