“Time spent with a cat,

Is never wasted.”

Colette

Her world now

Consisted of

Fear

Hunger

And loneliness

Her world now

Contained

Darkness

Deserted homes

And utter misery

She traveled at night

Always alone

Always leery

Ever vigilant

She had to be

Cruel men hunted her

As did wild packs

Of starving dogs

Her solitary path

Crossed mine

One dark eerie

New Orleans night

She froze in her tracks

I quickly froze in mine

She stared at me through haunted eyes

I stared back at this emaciated grey ghost

She eventually sat down in the mud

Diligently studying me

I eventually sat down in the mud

Sadly observing her

Silence all around us

No street lights

No moonlight

No traffic noises

It was surreal

It was as if

This tiny grey ghost and I

Were the only beings in this city

She wondered

If she could trust me

I wondered

If she would ever trust anyone

Again

Suddenly

Low snarls pierced the eerie night air

We both looked up the dark desolate street

Six very hungry dogs stood there watching us

She made a decision

She had to

Her continued existence

Depended on it

She took a daring chance

And raced up to me

I quickly scooped her up

And placed her in my truck

We drove off together

This terrified grey ghost and I

As six salivating snarling dogs

Desperately rushed off

In search of their next meal

One less emaciated ghost

Now haunts old New Orleans

A place today for former pets

That has turned so savagely mean

I sit here with maddelleine, sleek and fat atop the monitor, middy sleek and fat watching from across the room, lulu and her 4 sleek and fat kids asleep in a heap, all throw aways, and vow, if i have to leave them behind, i don't go either.

This is a job that merits all the help you can get. Have you thought of bringing this to the attention of Gov. Blanco? I am sure she will take this into consideration and give you all the help she can. I am happy to learn that her good name has been cleared by the one who was negligent in delaying help during this time of need.

I am so glad she decided to trust you, Ed. The life of a feral cat is sad at very best. They live in fear and danger and learn to trust no one. They live their days in hiding and their nights in a frightful search for food and water. Often they eat their young in an effort to hide them from other cats who will kill the kittens in order to sire the female's next litter. In New Orleans it is even worse because so many are in competition for whatever scraps there are to be found. I think that the city should prepare a feeding place for these homeless pets. A place where there is a trough of fresh water and food for them. It would also make it easier to trap them and take them to a safe haven, if it was known where they would gather. The cost is small compared to the possibility of one child being mauled by a hungry pack of dogs or someone's pet being killed as food for a starving, homeless animal. Also there is the disease factor. As time progresses, the innoculations that these animals may have received will no longer be effective and the epidemic that could result will spill over into those animals who do have homes and families. We need to think toward the future where these animals are concerned and not act as though they will just blend back into society. Such a tearful write this is, Ed as I hurt for the fear that Gray Ghost lived in, and then as I was elated that she was finally taken to safety. One of the feral cats that I care for was given the same name by me as when he arrived at my feeding area, he was so thin I could see all of his bones, and most of his hair was missing from dehydration.
Take care,
Sherry

I applaud all you do, Ed. Sadly though, this world does not have nearly the number of people like you that it needs to have. Animals, while it is not right or fair, are often the forgotten entity in times of crisis, such as in post-hurricane zones. I pray these animals will find peace and hopefully, homes that are loving and safe.

Keep up the great work you do.

My friend you know how to stir the deepest emotions. What a grand bit of writing this is! I'm so sad for what's happening in New Orleans! It seems as much as you do Ed , and you do a lot, there were still the six snarling dogs, and many more like them. One wonders when it will all be resolved.I'm starting special prayers.

Never did we expect her to trust you! How wonderful that she did, she must have, like most animals do, sensed that you are not a threat, but there to help. It is definitly more than just luck that you have been there, at the right time. Wonderful written!

My face looked like the grey ghost in the picture when I was reading this soul-touching marvelous poem.

She wondered
If she could trust me

I wondered
If she would ever trust anyone

And Abdi-Noor wondered if you two would ever meet. And she finally trusted you. AAHH ........ what a sigh of relief! God sees how kind you are to the animals and shall no doubt reward you, Ed.
