The annual Barkus Parade was held last Sunday

It’s a Mardi Gras parade for dogs in New Orleans

Many of the ‘left behind’ Katrina dogs were there

Pets that had been forgotten on the streets so mean

Dogs of every shape size and color were represented

These were dogs that were extremely glad to be alive

And there were people cheering and lively Cajun music

Celebrating these marvelous rescued pets that now thrive

And at the very front of the festive parade route

Marched my old friend the Pit Bull named Red

Who has become the incredible Katrina Mascot

Representing animals resurrected from the dead

Old Red truly seemed to know his important role

 It was as if this was the best time he had ever had

Eagerly greeting everyone he met along the parade route

Enjoying the attention of seniors young kids Moms and Dads

For me Red represents the reason we rescuers went down there

I believe all of our pets truly deserve love and compassion in this life

And I sincerely hope that when the next major disaster strikes our shores

We never again put our faithful pets through such horrendous hell and strife
