“And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, son?

I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad;
You know we'll have a good time then.”

Cats in the Cradle,

Harry Chapin

As Father’s Day quickly approaches

I’m still working around his old home

And oddly enough I keep finding treasures

Making me believe his spirit here still roams

As I was cleaning out a deep closet yesterday

A picture of him came spiraling to the dusty floor

He was proudly standing next to his B-26 Bomber

He had sent this photo to his sweetheart from the war

Then I spotted his old military boots

It was if they had just been spit shined

Now I really felt his presence in the house

To me it was a feeling that was truly divine

As I continued to explore the cluttered old attic

A copy of his discharge papers fell from an old book

Right onto a tiny cardboard box filled with many items

That made me stop in my tracks and take a good long look

There was an embroidered handkerchief his mother gave him

There was his comb his calculator and a neatly folded city map

There were bus tokens he had used to travel to his job downtown

And now an old love letter from his sweetheart sprawled on my lap

I spent several hours marveling at many of his personal items

They made me feel even closer to him in so many different ways

It was as if he were right here still sharing his life and his love with me

So I’ve decided to visit him right here again this Sunday on Father’s Day

“And I know we’ll have a good time then, Dad,

We’re gonna have a good time then”

Ed, you made me cry when reading this. So much of your fathers past fell into your lap...."We're gonna have a good time then", fit so appropriately. I hope you grew to know more about your Dad as well as your mother that day.

I agree with Chanti, Ed. This poem does invoke the special memories we have of our childhoods and the time spent with our fathers. This is absolutely beautiful! My Dad is still living, but he is in poor health and I cherish the times that we have together.

Take care,
Jill

A poem that made me smile but also put a tear in my eye. I can relate to that time you spent 'visiting' with your dad. I experienced the same when my father died and I had to pack up his belongings. Those memories I found made me feel closer to him too.
Enjoy your visit on Father's day.

Great father's day poem. Having read your book 'Curious Creatures...' and seeing the description of the old house within the pages, it was nice to see the photo to go with it.

I n s p i r e d. Your father would be. . .no, IS. . .so proud.
You have painted the picture with a very fine brush, indeed.

Sounds like his spirit ws there with you at the old house - memories are what life is about but we do need to move on. Some of us are not so fortunate to have all the good memories so that is what forgivness is all about. We must weigh those careful with the good ones and be thankful for what we do have. Pain does not last accept for a little while and after it is over it is hard to remember - That is a gift from God.
