Poem Artwork
-->

My spouse recently managed to flood our whole basement

By misdirecting the water hose on our washing machine

Causing some usually unobtrusive crawl space dwellers

To painfully make their displeasure both felt and seen

One of our basement loving cats named Fat Louie

Who’s an extremely gentle but not very agile fellow

Took the brunt of their agitated water soaked revenge

And poor Louie these days isn’t feeling very mellow

I had to rush him to the veterinarian’s office

Where they had to keep him on an antibiotic IV

And when I returned home to mop up the wet mess

One of these spiders now took its revenge out on me

By the very next god-awful morning

My right foot looked like a volleyball

Now I’m in a lot of pain on antibiotics

And I can’t seem to walk very well at all

But there is an up-side to this tale of nature’s revenge

My spouse is now treating both Louie and me like kings

He just ordered some smoked salmon from the delicatessen

I just sent her off to fetch some more beer and spicy buffalo wings

Fat Louie and I have now decided

That our revenge is pretty sweet too

Being served our every desire very promptly

Helps take the sting out of these Bite Me Blues

“And, Sweetie, when you get back

from making that food run,

Don’t forget to walk the dogs.”

“Yes, Dear.”

“And the lawn needs mowing!”

“Yes, Dear.”

“Fat Louie, we may want to milk this

For a very long time!”

“MEOOOOOOWWWWW!”

By Their Very Name,

Brown Recluse Spiders

Attempt to Avoid We Humans;

But When We Agitate Them,

We Will Often Pay the Price

They Can Be Found

In Deep Dark Closets, Cellars,

Crawl Spaces, Attics, and Garages;

Preferring Dry Locations

That Remain Undisturbed

And There Was a Time

When These Spiders

Were Never Found

As Far North as My Home

But Quite a Few Biologists Today

Believe That Many of Earth’s Creatures

Are Migrating Further and Further Northward

Because of Increased Global Warming

So Be Careful Out There,

And Evidently,

Indoors as Well

Nature Seems to Be

Increasingly Upset With Us

These Days;

And It’s Probably

Our Own Damned Fault

This spider bite

Is worse than anything

I’ve experienced in the field

From snake bites and insect stings

To riled skunk encounters;

And it occurred in my own home

But the vet and the physician

Say Louie and I will be just fine

So we’ll try to make the best of it

But we’ll both probably be singin

The Bite Me Blues for quite some time

“YEOWWWWW!”

“MEOWWWWW!”

“YEOWWWWW!”

“MEOWWWWW!”

Ed, I'm glad to hear that you and Fat Louie are recovering! What an experience! Your plight with the spider bite has made me be extra watchful.

According to the information on this website: [ http://www.thebestcontrol.com/bugstop/control_spiders.htm ]
We "are never more than 12' from a spider." (yikes!)
They also have a list of safe ways to keep spiders away from the house.
Here are two that I'm going to try. I don't like using bug spray because I have so many lizards around my house. They keep the bugs at bay most of the time, though sometimes a few get through. Arizona's a pretty buggy place this time of year.

~ Spray straight 5% white distilled vinegar with a teaspoon of coconut oil to help remove and help prevent spider webs.

~Lightly sprinkle talcum or medicated body powder or Comet® or food-grade DE in sill boxes and along walls, etc.

Hope you and Fat Louie make FULL recoveries! (and still get all the beer you want!)

Are you serious, a brown recluse? Yikes Ed! I've taken a gander at some photos of the not too cool results of that violin-backed biter and whoa...I don't want to get in their way. But a cousin of his took a nibble on the side of my forehead about three weeks ago and it's evidence has just now gone away. Eddy...my Momma taught me never to let on that I knew how to maueuver the mower...just the spade and the rake...walking the dog now, no problemo. Guess you can hop to the washer though now that it's rerouted?!? Oh and , you can have the snakes!
Get better soon,
Taylor

I have killed many of those aliens. We live in an old wooden house, like a cottage, they love the corners under the house.

Ed, those doggone horrid things can kill certain people. I am thankful you will recover. The pain, I hear, is awful, and the recovery time sometimes takes weeks.

We also have black widows that spin their tunnel webs in the iceplant on the back hill. The skunks usually take care of them. Thank God!

My sympathies, and hopes for a quick and complete recovery brother. It hasn't lessened your indomitable creative spirit - this is good!

Mr Ed! please do all you are told to do and don't mess around. I have seen what these brown spder bites can do! When I worked in the hospital one young man was in for such a bite and spent 2 months there before he fortunately left alive. They can be very painful and dangerous. So stay put and do as your told!!!I'm praying! How incredible the spider got both you and Louie!So you have a wailing pal;-)

WEEOUCH!! Poor, poor baby; glad you are going to be okay! You are in my prayers, as is Fat Louie! You are certainly lucky to still have your foot, and your kitty pal is lucky to be alive; it could have very easily been a whole lot worse! God bless you, dear heart!
