- A Follow-up to New Year Barfly Blues -

Another New Year’s Day has come and gone,

I’m in the outhouse again, what went wrong?

All I did was show some compassion to a cat,

How can there be anything wrong with that?

How was I to know he would snuggle in her nightgown,

How was I to know my laughter would make her frown?

Men and women must truly be very different creatures,

I think being compassionate is one of my best features.

Yet here I sit out in the outhouse, yet once again,

Will she ever forgive me, or is this really the end?

Here I sit drinking alone, remembering the good times,

Surely what I did cannot be considered a major crime?

Will she once again cook dinner and allow me to dine,

Will our marital bliss return, perhaps with a little wine?

Can this new year still be salvaged, better than the last,

Will she give me yet another chance, and forget our past?

I probably should have given her more gifts at Christmas,

I wonder if that would have brought us more marital bliss?

But I did take her out dining and dancing on New Year’s Eve,

How was I to know that a kitten such mischief would achieve?

Should I now rush out and buy her a new nightgown for bed,

How was I to know that Barfly’s claws her old one would shred?

Or perhaps I should buy her some luscious chocolates and flowers,

Or maybe another romantic dinner in town would make her less dour?

But Wait!  Maybe I should get her another new pet?!

An adorable little puppy dog would cheer her up, I bet.

I guess sitting out here in the outhouse thinking isn’t so bad,

I can picture her now with her new dog, so very happy and glad.

I guess I better end this poem and head off to the pound,

A new level to our loving relationship is soon to be found!
