“Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope;

Winter alone reminds us of the human condition.”

Mignon McLaughlin

The Holidays are over

Cabin Fever has set in

Winter suddenly is dreary

Another cold grey day begins

The six of us head out very early

Praying for at least a little sunshine

Not a sound in the dark grey forest

Of bird and beast not even a small sign

Even the many forest dwellers

Seem to be glum and silent today

As we traipse down the wooded path

Hoping to at least spot a boisterous jay

We eventually reach the frozen lake

A very eerie and surreal grey scene

Not one single creature is stirring

The deadly silence seems obscene

And it seems like only yesterday

That this lake was teeming with life

We now sadly trudge back towards home

The dogs myself and my now pale grey wife

The grey snow and ice crunch underfoot

Even our grey breath seems frozen in time

On grim icy grey winter mornings like this one

Old Man Winter should be arrested for his crime

My very winter weary wife soon heads back up to bed

My dogs and I now lament this latest grey grim cold snap

And soon I am alone again peering out through frosted glass

While every other house resident drifts off to a grey winter's nap

The Holidays are over

Cabin Fever has set in

Winter has become dreary

Another cold grey day begins

You sketch a bleak picture herein, Ed! Crazy as it may sound, I welcome Earth's deep winter's sleep as a time for peaceful inner reflection, a time to digest life's lessons of the preceeding months...
Stay warm, dear poet!

Well if this doesn;t remind me of my New England winters , then I donlt know what does...even the scene is perfect from my house on Silver lake to the quiet greay of the forest...but the under the duvet was a cozy place to spend an afternoon.

The chill of Winter emerges through your descriptive piece. I love the silence and the cold but I like getting home and feeling the warmth of the fireplace "-peering out through frosted glass."

Enjoy winter while you can, cause as stated by alot of scientists, cold days and nights are at a premium...warmth will be the order of the day...(& I had to turn down the music, I love that song and could not read the poem while singing the words to myself...LOL) Ed & Ruf

I think I would enjoy even a grey day for the surrealism and the Muse it would invoke. I've not experienced this kind of cold before.

Susan

I've not got the fever yet...well, not for need to leave the cabin, but for fever to stay in...we've really not had much of a winter yet...but never say never...I may be the next one with cabin fever. Great write, I have had cabin fever in the past, it's terrible. One year we had a terrible ice storm hit here in Ky. Electricity was out for two weeks, we lived in the basement with kerosene heaters, cooking on the gas grill and living like bats...only so much one can do using candles, kerosene, and gas for utilities...no bathrooms becasue we have well water!!! Man, talk about roughing it! Hope the ice stays away from Ky!
Blessings,
Jocye Bowlng

You described the feelings of most with this write. Winter can be long and cold (especially here Canada eh?). When I was a kid, winter use to be my favorite season-snowmobiling,skating,making "forts". Now that I'm older, it's not much fun LOL. Great descriptive write Mr.Ed. Hugs, Laura

Mr. Ed, this was an enjoyable read! I could hear the crunchy ice under your feet and feel the brr...brr...in your bones. I really like the different senses this brought to this reader. I like the picture too.

You did well to write a poem in the form of a tree. Great description of winter. Can't say I love winter much, I'm prone to sore throats, but this year it's been so mild that up to know I've escaped the antibiotics. Victor

It is partly cloudy in my City today (the snow and ice have melted)...

Wonderfully written piece!

Thank you
