Funny how a comment on one of my stories

Sparked many childhood memories of my own

I hadn’t thought about this writer in many years

And now I find myself about him – writing this poem

Albert Payson Terhune

Was born in New Jersey back in 1872

He was an American author and journalist

And his love for dogs especially Collies was true

Many of his epic dog stories were published in magazines

Such as The Ladies Home Journal, AKC Gazette, and Redbook

If you are a fellow kindred dog lover and have never read this author

You might want to think about it and at his work perhaps take a look

The first of his numerous books about canines was Lad: A Dog

Which contained about a dozen stories about his beloved Collie

And Ted’s comment even made me remember I saw the movie

Lad: A Dog - way back in 1962 - which truly filled me with glee

Even more remarkable in my now re-vitalized memories of Terhune

Is a comment made by good old Charlie Brown in an early Peanuts strip

Charlie Brown laments that the only stories Snoopy likes are by Terhune

Plot Description of the 1962 Movie:  Lad: A Dog

This sentimental film is based on the true adventures of author Albert Payson Terhune's collie, as immortalized in Terhune's early 1920's novel.   Lad comes to the rescue again and again, implying in more than one instance that dogs can be smarter than at least a few people.

The canine saves his little mistress Angela (a nine-year-old Angela Cartwright just before her role in TV's Lost in Space) from a poisonous snake bite and is mistakenly ill-treated as a consequence, his actions help cure her need for a wheelchair, and furthermore, the dog prevents a local troublemaker from torching the family's barn. (A young Carroll O’Connor of redneck Archie Bunker TV fame, plays her crotchety neighbor.)
