"I had something in my heart,” said Kayla, a fourth-grader,

"And I knew he wasn't gone.”

He vanished from home

Six very long years ago

But in her heart and soul

Kayla wouldn’t let him go

At the time of his disappearance

Her friend ‘Cujo’ was seven years old

He somehow ended up over 100 miles away

In the home of a very compassionate widow

But when this very kind elderly woman

Had to go live in a nursing home one day

Cujo the again homeless Golden Retriever

By the local Humane Society was taken away

His picture eventually appeared on a Pet Adoption website

Kayla’s uncle spotted the missing Cujo there very recently

And when the reunion between these two good friends occurred

It was very evident that Kayla’s heart and soul now filled with glee

Having helped reunite Katrina pets with their former owners

I have seen firsthand how these reunions can uplift human souls

In this case the faith and hope of an extremely determined little girl

Somehow managed to bring home her good friend now 13 years old

After Cujo went missing, Kayla’s family had put up posters, had offered a $500 reward, and had called every animal shelter and veterinarian clinic in their area looking for him.

And every year since then, little Kayla, who was just 4 years old when her friend disappeared, insisted that Cujo's Christmas stocking be hung on the chimney.

Kayla, now 10, still has his old Christmas stocking and the cedar-lined black cushion her furry friend Cujo used to sleep on.

And now, she can't stop petting his soft golden fur.

Reunions between long lost friends – of any kind – are always marvelous.

This is such a sweet story, Ed, kind of like a modern day "Lassie Come Home". How could anyone not smile at the thought of a pet reunited with a child?
Take care,
Sherry

I think children have a capacity for hope far beyond ours as adults. Not yet jaded by the harsh realities of adult life, children can hold on to hope with faith that is much stronger than we realize. This is a fantastic story! Thanks for sharing it with us Mr. Ed! Welcome home Cujo!

OH how beautiful and sweet this write is...I loved it! I had a cat that disappeared, he was a housecat and a wonderful friend. He got outside one day and well I never saw him again...until...weeks and weeks later my brother who lived about five miles from us told my mom about a cat that had just decided to move in at house. She gave me the description and I went to see for myself, it was Sebastian, I took him home, he got out again, and went back to my brothers house, this happened about four times, I finally gave up and let my brother have him. He wasn't a housecat, he was a farm cat and was in love with a big yellow tabby cat that lived in my brothers barn....
great write, enjoyed it!
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

Ed,
This poem touched me very deeply. I have a dog named Blackie that I adore! If something happened to him it would be like losing a child. He's my baby and I love him very much. I'm glad this had a happy ending for Kayla and her family. She never lost hope that Cujo would be found. Miracles do happen. Thanks for sharing, Ed.
