Dust in the Wind

Our modern world truly is in extremely dire straits today

And it’s extremely hard for me to retain a positive attitude

But each and every day when I get out of bed in the morning

I search for something I can do to relieve my somber mood

Although I know my meager donation

Won’t end child hunger in Africa

I send it anyway

Although our nation rushes soldiers off to war

And always soon forgets them when they return

I pause to remember at their many cemeteries anyway

Although I know visiting a veteran in the hospital

Won’t bring his arm or leg back

I visit him anyway

Although society no longer appreciates the wisdom of elders

In our selfish fast-paced youth oriented modern day culture

I listen to their sage stories anyway

Although I know donating my old winter coat

Will help only one frozen soul at the soup kitchen

I donate it anyway

Although I know signing yet one more petition

Won’t save the grey wolf from extinction

I sign it anyway

Although I know adopting just one more forlorn kitten

Won’t solve America’s horrendous homeless pet problem

I adopt it anyway

Although I sadly know patronizing the Mom & Pop drugstore

Won’t save it from being closed by the gigantic pharmacy chain

I still fill my prescriptions and shop there anyway

Although I know writing one more letter to my Congressman

Won’t save our national parks from modern day destruction

I write it anyway

Although I know walking instead of driving to the Post Office

Won’t save our planet from Global Warming

I walk there anyway

Although I know dropping my change into the pail at the grocers

Won’t lead to a cure for cancer in my lifetime

I drop those coins in anyway

Although I know saying hello to a stranger on the street

Probably won’t even merit a response from them these days

I say ‘Hello’ anyway

Although I know I will most likely die

Long before this world becomes a better place

I’ll keep doing all of these things - anyway

Maybe Kansas is right, and we’re all truly just dust in the wind

But I have to do something anyway, when my new day begins
