It’s again National Hospitalized Veterans Week

Something most of us Americans don’t even know

How soon we as a nation forget vets when they return

How quickly we cheer them on when off to war they go

The current bloody wars in Afghanistan and Iraq

Have sadly produced many heartbreaking casualties

Many of these valiant veterans have lost arms and legs

Many have suffered brain injuries affecting mental capacity

Many World War II, Korean, and Vietnam War Veterans

Now Live in Veteran Hospitals and Veteran Nursing Homes

If we as a nation ever start giving them the respect they are due

Veteran advocates like myself could start penning cheerful poems

Our veterans with few family members, or who are up in age,

Always love receiving visits, cards, greetings, and Thank Yous

We all need to make it a point to visit our valiant veterans frequently

I’m learning the location of every VA facility - and I hope you will, too

Please Make it a Habit To Visit, Call, or Write Our Vets

What they have endured, they’ve endured for you and me

As a nation we owe far more respect to them than we give

They would like hearing from us all year – not just in February

And our politicians are already making plans

To cut their healthcare funding yet once more

Something everyone in America should protest

Something everyone in America should abhor

All our politicians love to shout,

“We Must Support Our Troops!”

Yet very often behind the scenes these days,

They very eagerly cut them from the funding loop
