“I still find each day too short

For all the thoughts I want to think,

All the walks I want to take,

All the books I want to read,

And all the friends I want to see.”

John Burroughs

I drove by an old city park

Just a few short days ago

So I stopped there for a time

Just to reminisce and to say hello

It had been an early childhood haunt

My grandfather had shown it to me

And when I spotted that old bench

My heart suddenly filled with glee

He and I had perched there together

On many a glorious summer’s day

Joyously laughing and talking together

Feeding the ducks and the boisterous jays

I was thrilled that it was still here

And that it had recently been painted

I soon walked right up and admired it

Happy that we were now reacquainted

And as I sat down on that old bench

I was suddenly swept back in time

I closed my eyes and pictured it all

It was very soothing and so sublime

I could now hear my dear old grandfather

His voice drifted in on the morning breeze

“Edju, when you are feeling a little down,

Come here, and sit amongst these trees.”

“Always listen to these birds,

They are never ever sad,

If you follow their example,

Your heart will always be glad.”

And at that very moment in time

I realized how wise he had truly been

I should have come here far more often

And I knew now I would soon visit again

It had truly been a very soul soothing experience

Sitting on that old bench in that old childhood park

And my heart now rejoiced that after 50 some years

There were still some ducks bluejays and meadowlarks

When I eventually got up and then walked off

I turned back and spotted an old man and a boy

They were now sitting on that old bench together

And as I drove away my heart now filled with joy

I hope that young boy’s time here with his grandfather

Will be as memorable and as enjoyable as mine had been

And I truly hope that as he now journeys on through his life

He too will come back to see our old friend the bench again

What a great story! Wish things like that were still around for my past, but alas...all have been torn down and replaced with new. Glad you have this!

Very nice. It is kind of intresting that the bench was still there. I wonder how long that it has been there sitting in that park and how people have sat on it and fed the birds. I really like the quoat at the begining.

When I sat down to look at this, Ed, my grandson, who just turned 3, attracted by the music like usual, came over to sit on my knee to look at it. His language isn't all clear yet, but he looked up at me, and said, "Misser Ed?" Apparently he associates you with the music and the picture. Your bench write is creating another memory, and I think that's a better review than I could have done without him...Jerry

If all would listen to your grandfather...life sometimes teach us the great lessons just sitting there and looking at the world with different eyes, a little more curious, a little more receptive.
This is a very good one.

Wonderful memories, the small ones that shape our lives, we oft forget ...focusing on the day to day drugery...but when we do have a moment of rememberance....our minds bring back whole era's and other associated times, people, and feelings.
I enjoyed this a lot...I often travel the backroads of my childhood haunts
G'day to ya,

Walt

Thanks, Ed. That reminded me of the court house benches we used to have in my home town. I sat there as a little girl with my grandfather on many a day.

Mr. Ed,

The bench will appreciate you writing about its life, as do I. Thank you for the trip down nostalgia's path: if we'd all just take the time to sit back and watch the world pass by, we'd all be a whole lot better off! Excellent write, yet again.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Definately a keeper. Thank you!

BLUB BLUB..... Me, too, Ed... Life is just waaaaaaaaaay too short and I found this account so moving. Yes, perhaps that remembrance might ONLY have resurfaced on going there, but what an important memoir it rekindled. It touches on thoughts I was having at the beach this morning about just such an occurrence, that no matter how tiny the moment, it has the ability to resurface and be illumined in other ways and in other places and to be shared and magnified among many. Like this your write of just such a precious little time. And isn't it uncanny that somehow, benches are NEVER empty, even if there is no-one sitting on them at the time... Now THAT'S another poem I also thought about this morning... AMAZING!! JUST LOVE THIS, THANK YOU. Kate xx
