A Follow-Up

To My Short Story,

A Bum, With a Pocketful of Diamonds

And My Thanks To My Friend, Georg Mateos,

For His Poem,

Of Love Made With Lies

And To My Friend, J. Allen Wilson,

For His Poem,

The Dear Eddie Of The Animal Kingdom

Thank God that I had a loyal co-pilot

When after my divorce, I drove away

And to her, my devoted guardian angel

I owed a debt, that I could never re-pay

There were days that I couldn’t fly straight

When I was depressed, and I started to drink

But she was always right there by my right side

To remind me to pull over for awhile, and to think

Very soon, the two of us were living in a small apartment

And she never complained very much, that I couldn’t cook

She was content to hover there by my side, ever on guard duty

As I snoozed, watched television, or began reading another book

And very soon, she became my very loyal fishing partner

We shared many an adventure in the wilderness together

She never complained about our meager accommodations

She was a true blue friend in both sunshine and foul weather

And it was her eager enthusiasm in investigating all kinds of wildlife

That led to my interest in and true love of forest creatures and lake fowl

Although we shared some bad experiences, like being sprayed by skunks

How I vividly recall each and every episode, and how we both truly did howl

It was also because of my extremely compassionate furry co-pilot

That I also developed an interest in and a love for homeless alley cats

One day, out of the blue, she adopted a starving feline right in our yard

Soon, she became a surrogate mother to about ten of them, just like that

She also became my devoted nurse, every time that I fell ill

She literally saved my life one night after I underwent surgery

I hemorrhaged in my sleep, and she diligently woke me up

If she had not, it certainly would have been the very end of me

And the very black day that I lost my devoted co-pilot to cancer

As I buried her in my backyard, drenched in both agony and tears

I finally realized how selfless our animal friends are to we humans

Recalling how she faithfully pulled me through all my divorce fears

Several weeks later, as I put pen to paper, recalling my co-pilot’s story

I soon found that each and every page was drenched in my thick wet tears

Her story was the very first written work that I ever sold to a national magazine

It was because of my co-pilot, that today, as a writer and an author, I am here

If life ever beats you down like it truly had me,

And no friends can be found anywhere around,

I highly recommend you find yourself a co-pilot,

At your local animal shelter, or city dog pound.

Today, I have four extremely loyal co-pilots,

And some people might think that a bit odd,

But when anyone ever questions me about that,

I remind them DOG spelled backwards is GOD.

And I now believe in my heart and soul,

That His Guardian Angels really do exist,

And that they truly come to us,

In all sorts of shapes, sizes, and forms,

And very often, right when we need them most.

This is only one of so many stories about the unconditional love we receive from animals and they way that they change our lives. I will never undersand how some can think that it is alright to be cruel to them or abuse them, it breaks my heart to even think about it. We share the earth with all that reside here and there is no such thing as a worthless creature, for once they are gone, there will never be another exactly like them. The only difference between Man and Animals is that the animals are more compassionate, forgiving and in so many ways, smarter.
Take care,
Sherry

an old friend of mine was once swimming when he was caught in a strong riptide ... he disappeared from my sight ... thought he was lost ... i then saw a small figure approach in the distant shore ... to my amazement and relief it was him ... i asked him what happened ... he said he was going down for the third time when a dog suddenly swam before him ... he grabbed onto its tail ... before he realized he was close to shore ... a large wave brought him in ... when he stood up, the dog had vanished ... he was neither in the water or on the shore ...

Ed, I loved the way you used your metaphor...it was a great idea! This made tears come to my eyes and a love for your dear co-pilot...I think this is one of your very best. It's full of vivid lifelike images and a story that sticks to the heart like glue on fingers. I've captured a picture that will be with me for sometime...I truly enjoyed it!

This is a lovely poem, and you use a great metaphor with the image of a co-pilot. I grew up with two wonderful cats and they cheered me up no end, sun or snow. Thanks for this gem of piece.

Ed, this is so very realevant for me at this time in my life.
Now I guess I will have to ask for custody, or at least visitation rights, of my beloved rescued feline, "Trixie."
I was told after I left Trixie went all through the house everyday crying and looking for me.

But now you got Beck's, so it's onwards and upwards for steady Eddie.
Animals do have a sixth sense, had much the same with two cats, then she even took them away....
Good show ole chum, and for all your pedigree chums.

Seems to somehow fit with the rain lashing down outside, and water levels still rising...

And how'd she wake you up when you were bleeding, Ed? Do tell us...

Yep, you nailed our silent(ish) sidekick(not) sleeping(sometimes)partners who are Goddog's ministering shaggy servants to us who are blessed to call them ours.

Mr. Ed, you've written--and I've read--some beautiful works. However, this one, "Co-Pilot" has to be your best. It is a classic and one of the most touching pieces I've ever read. I'm blinded by tears as I write this. What a wonderful story about rising beyond the pain of a broken marriage and a broken dream. And what a heroic life-saver in that furry friend who was always with you, giving love and never asking any in return.

Keep writing them like this one, Ed. It's really beautiful.

You really tugged at my heart-strings with this one. One of the greatest things God has done, in my opinion, is making pets--most especially, dogs--to be our canine co-pilots. I fervently hope He will have my little "Corky" in heaven to be my buddy there.
One of my girls often speaks of the times when "Niki" listened to her troubles, and helped her get through them.
Thanks for writing so eloquently about your own doggy-angel.

Woof-woof,
Connie

DOG backwards spells GOD, and He, that created all creatures put them around us as our unselfish angels, not asking nothing but furiously wagging in content when receiving a little from us.
Without your co-pilot you have been crashed a long long time ago.
Thanks for sharing.

May Pepper be in Heaven right next to God, taking care of him as she took care of you. Oh Ed, I'm so sorry! I know what it is like to lose a co-pilot, I have had three that have left me to go to be with him. I have loved them so much that each week, I cheerfully pulled up my sleeve for that allergy shot and took all those allergy pills, and still sneezed my head off. I didn't eat to make sure they did. They are special, our furry co-pilots.

Bless you!
Ann
