Poem Artwork
-->

I’ve Now Traveled a Very Long Road,

Since I Was a Bum, With a Pocketful of Diamonds,

But Eventually, I Found  a Wonderful Treasure Along the Way,

The Highway of Life Very Magically Brought Us Together One Day

“Ultimately the bond of all companionship,

Whether in marriage or in friendship,

is conversation.”

Oscar Wilde

Although Dog is my Co-Pilot

My loving Spouse is my Navigator

Keeping me on the Straight and Narrow

Always Guiding Me, Much Sooner than Later

She always seems to know just where we are headed

She somehow instinctively knows, just how to get us there

Without her very impressive navigating skills, I would be lost

I still have a tendency to get sidetracked, wandering everywhere

And I’ve learned that we can now talk about anything

She always listens very intently to me at dinner, as we sup

She hangs on almost every word that I utter, as we travel along,

But eventually when I get under her skin, she tells me to ‘Shut Up!’

She gets bored by my lengthy discourses about world history

She’s not too impressed when I discuss the anatomy of bugs

But she really swoons when I recite a very romantic poem to her

Her body language always emits such wondrous kisses and hugs

And every time I find another helpless critter on the road

She loves giving me sheer and utter hell for quite some time

But before very long, these waifs manage to get under her skin

And for me, watching her mother them, is always so truly divine

I believe that old Oscar Wilde was correct about conversation

My Navigator allows me to ramble on about anything under the sun

But our ability to eventually and inevitably get under each other’s skin

Now makes our marriage such a wondrous thing, and always so much fun

“Just shut up already, and drive, You Old Windbag!”

“Yes, Dear!”

Luckily, my four Co-Pilots Still Diligently Listen To All My Bug Stories,

So Everything Seems to Be Rolling Along Quite Nicely These Days

“Come, let's be a comfortable couple and take care of each other!

How glad we shall be, that we have somebody we are fond of always,

To talk to, and sit with, and ride with, (and eventually scream ‘Shut Up!).”

Charles Dickens

I'm just intrigued by the picture of you with four dogs and one woman on a motorcycle...don't spoil it by telling me it's a car. Sweet, funny poem, Ed. I'm just glad the almighty didn't add criticism to companionship in the Bible...Jerry

Good to hear that your spouse has a good sense of direction; you have no worry to get lost in the bush. Wonderful poem. I love the way you stretch a single proverbial line into volumes of fun and wisdom. Thanks my dear friend Ed.

This is as good as it gets Mr Ed! You have life by the proverbials;-)
It's good of you to let others know who the woman behind the man is, so she can take a rightful bow!

So near and yet so far away of Chicago with the only company of an audience not interested in the anatomy of bugs, well, you couldn't have talked about lingerie with authority, could you?
Nice to have a Navigator, so, when our minds take off, somebody is aware of this abyss, that open cliff or running down a fat lady jay-walking as she is stuffing her face with ice cream...darn! I am disgressing, where's my navigator?
Nice piece.
