“The greatest gift,

Is a portion of thyself.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

My dogs had been pestering me for awhile

For a delightful romp in our favorite meadow

So the five of us very eagerly set off at first light

To a sacred place, where the wild cow pies grow

My dogs have always enjoyed rolling in them

I’ve always enjoyed flinging them like a Frisbee

I’ve even had occasion to use them as a natural fuel

They’ve always provided such warmth and tranquility

As the five of us very merrily romped in that meadow

I happened upon a magnificent heart shaped specimen

Suddenly, I felt like a very young school boy in love

With this pie, my loving sentiments, to her, I could send

After we returned home, very late yesterday afternoon

I rushed to my workshop, and I began working feverishly

Shining, and varnishing, and inscribing, with so much care

At dinner, I proudly presented my gift to her, filled with glee

She took a look at my masterpiece, laughed so sarcastically,

And later on in the evening, I watched her toss it into the trash

How could I have been so wrong about this very loving memento

Which proclaimed my undying love, which was truly meant to last

When I got up in the middle of the night, which I now often do

I retrieved it from the trash, and to the outhouse with me it went

It now has a very honored place, right here, on the crapper’s shelf

And every day, it will remind me of the true love, to her, that I sent

And although I’m now consumed with those dreaded Cow Pie Blues

I have one consolation, knowing she will again find it here when I die

And I can just picture her standing here now, admiring it so very fondly

Soon devoutly placing it on the mantle, with a loving teardrop in her eye

Or, she just might very quickly sell it on E-Bay,

And make yet another bundle of cold hard cash,

I cannot believe that she sold her Nightcrawler Necklace,

It, too, was made with a lot of love, and it was gone, so fast

†2007, A Very Crappy Feeling, Mr. Ed

(But Maybe It Was Just Those Spicy Tacos)

There is something of the Marvelous."

This really picked me up. I was feeling crappy with the casa de mio shice hoffa blues. I hope that beautiful Apache woman let you keep your hair after that gift. I wish I'd read this poem before I wrote the story What a man does for Valentine's. I'm about pooped out, Ed, bovinely speaking, so I'll just say moo, I loved it...really scarey very hairy prairie jerry.

Talk about an original gift...bet no other lady had one quite like it! I think the oddest gift that my husband ever gave me was the chair that he had welded for one of my dolls...it was welded from small copper pipes...cute, original...and now buried in the basement somewhere...oh yeah, then there was that ash tray, only thing is I don't smoke...and it was welded out of some kind of steel, heaviest ash tray I ever saw...I think it turned out to be a door stop for our basement door...where do you guys come up with these ideas? Loved the write, picture, and sentiment! Enjoyed!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

I hear that when you dry them out real good, and burn them, they keep the bugs away. The smell is a little clingy but you get used to it. Yes, anything spicy will do it to me too. A goodun brother ...

Now Ed after my laughing ended, I thought there has to be another portion of yourself you could offer to the love of your life, if you chose to continue having her as the love of your life. Thank you for the smile and chuckles but these kind of gifts could get you in deep s_ _t. Loved it.

You my dear friend are truly round the bend, but I do love the laughs it gives me. Your wife should make you wear half of it for a hat, and eat the other half for dinner, then see how much you love it;-)

I take it she isn't from Texas. A Texan would have adored it, but, then, we Texans (I'm a naturalized Texan because my daughter was born there)have such sophisticated events such as the Quero Turkey Festival complete with cowpie throwing contest and letting all the turkeys out to run through the middle of town, the Armadillo Festival complete with billionaire Texans dressing up the little armored creatures in satin, silk, and lace with diamond necklaces and the like for an Armadillo Beauty contest complete with diamond encrusted tiara.

I'm sorry you felt hurt, and I'm sure she did too. Bet she went looking for that treasure right after you did.

Great Poem!

Dear Ed,

I'm sure that your "sweetie" adores you, even if and especially, when you offer such gifts from the heart. Life has to be fun, right?

Love & Light always and in all ways,
Joseph*
