Inspired By An Old Memory,

And By Eileen Waldron’s Wonderful Poem,

My Stray Cat.

If you haven’t read it,

You really should.

I was on assignment at a veterans’ hospital

In the City by the Bay – old San Francisco

But I had decided to stay way across the bay

At a quaint Mom and Pop motel near Sausalito

And thinking back on this incident

It was a very troubled time in my life

My first marriage was now falling apart

I was having a lot of anxiety about my wife

As I lay wide awake in my room unable to sleep

I soon heard a sound like scratching at my door

I sat bolt upright in that bed and listened intently

And soon, I heard incessant scratching once more

I jumped out of bed and opened that door

To find a huge shaggy black and grey cat

This very intriguing creature walked right in

Jumped on my bed, and there he now sat

I suddenly felt sorry for this homeless waif

And I quickly decided to let him stay the night

Little did I know that it was the other way around

He had somehow decided to assist me in my plight

As I crawled back into bed about 2 AM

He began purring softly, directly in my ear

It was truly like a hypnotic therapy session

I quickly fell fast asleep without pain or fear

When I awoke very refreshed the next morning

This strange cat was now scratching to be let out

I soon opened the door for him and he disappeared

This had been one strange incident without a doubt

I soon inquired about this feline at the front desk

And the elderly woman smiled, and gave me a wink

“Why, that’s old Clarence, our resident furry angel,

He’s been around these parts about forever, I think.

“Have you ever seen the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life?

Clarence was the angel who managed to save the day.

Our furry little Clarence likes to visit our guests in need,

His purrs come right from Heaven, is what some folks say!”

I stayed at that very intriguing old Mom and Pop motel

For another several weeks after furry old Clarence came

I never saw that very mysterious grey and black cat again

But after his visit, my life would truly never be the same

He felt that you needed some help through telepathy and he came immidiately to provi0e some support. Cats and dogs have instincts that make them feel what other's in need feel. They have special connections with hearts filled of love especially when these hearts feel troubled. Wonderful write, dear Ed Kostro

Ed, this is a tremendous write...Clarence decided Mr. Ed needed some TLC and came to your aid. I do believe cats are one of the most intelligent animals living on earth. They seem to be able to read the thoughts of other people. I sure did enjoy your great writing & Yes, it did remind me of Eileen's great poem about the stray cat. Thanks Ed for sharing your wonderful poetry.

That cat was not only an angel, but a beautiful one at that;-) Thanks for the mention Ed! Your poems really inspire me to recall some wonderful incidents with both dogs and cats, and many pets in general. You are our resident St Francis of Assisi, that makes miraculous things happen!;-) Besides which you're a first class writer, and I love this poem!

I don't know why, but the name Clarence for some reason reminds me of a droopy eared bloodhound . Yup Ed ... you probably had a visit from an angel. Blessings ...

Hey! Ed, near Sausalito ain't near enough, Clarence was purring that information in your ear.
The poem? it should be read on the waterfront at the end of Main where long long ago I wet the hook trying to catch a fish.
Coming to it, I think old clarence snapped one from my bucket.

You must know that he was a messenger from the angels. You needed him that night, to bring you peace and sleep that was so needed. Without rest and peaceful sleep you cannot think clearly. After your sleep, you must have felt the peace that was intended and clarity came to you about your situation...Just trust in this, it was heaven sent...peace be with you Clarence and thank you for showing Mr. Ed the light.

Peace, Love, and Light,

Old Clarence reminds me of the nursing home cat you've already mentioned, there to comfort the dying, only Clarence seems to have been there to comfort the living. It makes a comforting twist. Thanks...Jerry
