“I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes,

When it wants to tell about something on its mind,

And can’t make itself understood,

And so can’t rest easy in its grave,

And has to go about that way every night grieving.”

Mark Twain

It was a real hot night

Outside of old Tucson

When he came a callin

On his big black stallion

I was fast asleep in my tent

When the wind began to stir

So I dragged myself outside

And on the hill I saw this blur

Then I heard an ancient chant

It sounded so powerfully sad

I couldn’t understand a word

Now I thought I was goin mad

Then I thought that I was dreamin

So I slowly rubbed my weary eyes

But when I looked out there again

He was still up there to my surprise

Soon I heard those massive hooves

They were now thunderin my way

I just stood there, unable to move

It’s still so vivid in my mind today

There was just somethin in his eyes

Black and hollow and filled with pain

And the feelin that I had as he rode up

Is probably somethin I can never explain

That huge black stallion was breathin hot fire

His rifle what a deadly message it could send

I closed my eyes and said a real hasty prayer

Thinkin that this was surely gonna be my end

As this haunted rider and his eerie black horse

Raced by me, I felt a strange sensation in the air

As I turned and watched them head into the desert

About all I could do was stand out there, and stare

Each and every time I dream about this old night rider

Back to that desert outside of Tucson, I now wanna go

And since that very eerie experience, I often think about

The night I’m fairly sure, I met the ghost of old Geronimo

Maybe you did see him, Ed. His medicine was respected as much as his war making. This is a good, spooky write. Reminds me of the country guys singing Ghost riders in the sky. What a strange coincidence that we were writing about Geronimo at about the same time. Thanks for pointing this out how it might fit with my story, Ignacio rode. I enjoyed this, and I can see how he might want the upgrade to a ferocious black stallion just to tell us "I really ain't whipped yet." This was the heart of a man who honestly accepted Christianity without guile while keeping the old ways of the Chiricahua. He never was afraid to do what he thought was best which is maybe why he was so respected--an item forgotten in pop culture concerning him...Jerry

If it wasn't Geronimo visiting your dreams I am sure it was Cochise, he was not the tactical one, but the one that would have charged undaunted you and anybody else considered an enemy.
By the way, Apache in zuni language means enemy.
Haw pale face!

I do love it when a good poet creates mystery and enchantment. I'm a writer of the ghosts and it's a writer;s license to go and run with an idea that seems all real. You have that special gift to make us step further into the unknown, Scare me again Ed. I love it!

ED - shades of the old western song " GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY " ... "when all at once I saw a mighty herd of riders in the sky... YIPPEE-I-A - YIPPEE-I-O... "

Love the pic - sorta, kinda looks like ED MATLACK... WITHOUT SKIN !!! LOL.

Can't help but wonder if paratroopers still scream out the word as they leap from planes...
GERONIMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... Tom.

Excellent Ed! I had dreams while I was
in Santa Fe, they were very strange and
the hoof beats were so vivid I awoke.
I always loved Santa Fe, it used to be a small
(well sorta) village. We always visited
the galleries and the flea markets. It fits
artists and poets, writers also I think.
It's grown so now but still retains its magic.

Ed, fantastic images grabed me into this poem immediately, kinda gave me the creeps...the thought of running into a ghost gives me the willies. Many people have experienced such happenings. I truly loved the way you brought this to life and the voice in which you dictated the writing. Loved it!!!

By the way
Geronimo, is my only true Hero
The U.S.A send an army of 5000 thousand after him.
And less the 200 "Warriors" including the wife and children
They gave their pursuers a run fot their money.
Peace
