Inspired by My Friend,

Tom Hyland,

And His Recent AD Article,

‘Paper or Plastic?’

“We hang the petty thieves,

And we appoint the great ones,

To public office.”

Aesop

Music:  Breathless, by Kenny G

What marvelous childhood memories

Helping my grandfather rake the leaves

Then standing there, as he burned them

What a splendid Fall smell in the breeze

Today, most of our very concerned elected officials

Have banned leaf burning as ‘air quality’ unhealthy

So today, millions of people bag their autumn leaves

These bags adorn lawns of both the poor and wealthy

These billions of leaf bags are by-products of the oil industry

And no matter what they say, these bags are not bio-degradable

So, these costly plastic bags, filled with all these autumn leaves

Will last for centuries in our land fills, which to me is deplorable

Yet, very few local, state, or federal officials anywhere

Seem to care much about noxious factory or vehicle fumes

These days, when I must travel to any city on any errand

The air is permeated with very foul odors and smoke plumes

Thank God that our elected officials stopped that leaf burning

I feel better knowing their environmental concerns are so good

And thank God that I only have to visit a city a few times a year

I’d rather reminisce about leaf burning out in the very deep wood

And if you would like to help our Mother Earth in the Autumn

Don’t bag the leaves on your lawn and deposit them at curbside

Mulch your leaves, and utilize their natural nutrients in compost

Next Spring, you’ll gaze at beautiful flowers and shrubs with pride

“There’s something out there watching over us,

Unfortunately, it’s the government.”

Woody Allen

MR. ED...

Well, by gosh, was surprised to see my name here, thank you for acknowledging! And the pictures are certainly poignant, and your poem quite well done - direct - truthful - hit the nail right on the head!

and both AESOP and WOODY are right on also! I just sent a nasty email to PELIGROSI last night about the DC Architect FLUNKY removing GOD from the Capitol Building. Either ACT, or AFA had sponsored it.

"You can lead a politician to Water; but she/he just PISSES in it!"

Grass Roots efforts... Autumn Leaves... Trees... Woodlands... Forests... Jungles... Prairies... MOTHER EARTH... ECOLOGY... GOD...

Peter, Paul and Mary --- "When will they EVER learn?..."

ONE Don Quixote... TWO don Quixotes... THREE Don Quixotes... NINE Don Quixotes... TWENTY-SEVEN Don Quixotes... SEVEN HUNDRED & TWENTY-NINE Don Quixotes... FIVE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE THOUSAND, FOUR HUNDRED & FORTY-ONE Don Quixotes...
TWO HUNDRED & EIGHTY-TWO BILLION, FOUR HUNDRED & TWENTY-NINE MILLION, FIVE HUNDRED & THIRTY-SIX THOUSAND, FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-ONE Don Quixotes...

POWER - STRENGTH - PURPOSE ? YES, ED, GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION IS THE ANSWER!

ONE match in the darkness... ONE candle lights the next... the process then becomes self-fulfilling, and ENLIGHTENMENT RESULTS!

History tells us that in every NATION, when the PEOPLE SPEAK OUT - Poets, Authors, Scientists, Engineers, and others of INTELLIGENCE --- DEMAND THE TRUTH... DEMAND ACTION... STAND UNIFIED... only then will the "HOUSE OF CARDS" finally TUMBLE!

SO ... continue to WRITE RIGHT... my Friend, then HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL!

WANTED --- JUST ONE MORE... TIRED, OLD, BATTLED-SCARRED KNIGHT !!!

A NEW WORLD AWAITS... !!! Pax Tecum, Tom.

encourage your waste company to pick up curb side - but not in bags...in Oregon we rake them into the curbs and twice each season they are removed to a compost center...there are issues with burning if you live in an area with an inversion layer...the smoke can hang in for days...but i also remember as a child, the metal cans we set our leaves in to burn them...there were designated burn days per neighborhood...it was a social gathering as everyone came out and stood around their cans...and i will always remember that smell...

Ed, your wonderful writings always bring us a lesson to learn. You bring us such good topics to dwell upon and to learn about. You should have your own magazine so you could share your great articles with the world.

Sadly, our politicians of today are more like the snake oil salesman of the past. Promise the people anything, say what they want, or think they want to hear and when elected rape and pillage those who put you there. Gone are the days of truth and honesy. Gone are the days of a gentlemen's agreement on a hand shake. Find it all so very sad.....

Be safe,
Karen

Some of my fondest memories as a child in a big family was the piles of leaves we all helped rake up and then our father holding our hands while we all jumped into them at once.
A Rockefellow painting if ever there was one.

35% of Scandinavians burn the autumn leaves, the other 65% make compost to fertilize their gardens.
If you find a leaft in a landfield, it was left there by the wind.
We should be thanking, for now, to have not so screwed up governments.

Good advice to heed, Mr. Ed., but I miss the smell of burning leaves; I always have loved the way burning leaves smell in the fall. Very well done; bravo!

Ed, I too love the days of burning leaves,, I am fortunate to live on 5 acres surrounded by much wet land and natural park , so my leaves are recycled the good earthly way. Thanks for opening eyes, and bringing this to our attention.

Good idea. When we moved out of Phila to the suburbs we had to start bagging our leaves, my husband and I hate doing this every year. Maybe we can find a way to mulch instead.
