Lots of Gnomes

Have Been Showing Up

Around our Home Lately

I spend a lot of my time in the woods

Both in my walks and in my dreams

And often, I have a tiny bit of trouble

Telling which is which, it often seems

Yesterday, on a stroll through the deep forest

I came upon a small gathering of wood gnomes

They were a most interesting group of characters

Led by Blaine, who wrecked my computer at home

This wily little gnome had arrived in the mail

I wonder who could have sent him back to me

To my amazement, he had climbed out of the box

And now, here he was to explain everything to me

“We have been hoping that you’d stroll by today,

We know you run The Pink Flamingo Sanctuary;

And we demand to know why you don’t like gnomes,

And why in your recent poems, you’ve been so contrary.”

“Uh, I guess I really don’t have anything against gnomes,

Except that you devilishly wrecked my computer at home;

I thought it only right I should warn others of your mischief,

So I’ve been penning a few ‘Beware of The Gnome’ poems.”

“We only sabotaged your computer to make you finally realize,

That we gnomes deserve as much respect as those pink flamingos;

And we were kind of wondering if you could give us sanctuary, too,

Like many other creatures today, we now have few places left to go.”

And I guess I must have agreed to let all these gnomes stay at our place

Since when I looked out the window, I saw them all in our yard at dawn

And now, I guess that I will never know if I somehow dreamt all of this

But I love waking up each day, wondering who will show up on our lawn

It seems that here at rustic old Thornwood Manor

We’ve got dogs, cats, birds,  and now, many gnomes;

But no matter who or what might show up here next,

We’ll welcome them to our old Thornwood Manor home

And to the person who sent Blaine back in the mail

Please expect the favor to be returned, very, very soon

Watch your mailbox for an extremely large wooden crate

I’m sending you the Creature from the Thornwood Lagoon

(He won’t bite, if you feed him 24 hours a day,

And ‘Fetch a Human,’ he really loves to play!)
