Poem Artwork

"If you take a dog which is starving,

And feed him and make him prosperous,

That dog will not bite you.

This is the primary difference between a dog and a man."

Mark Twain

Everyone and everything he knew

Was gone in the blink of an eye

He was left alone in the devastation

Why he survived I’ll never know why

And when I found him there that day

He jumped into my truck and he stayed

He refused to leave its comforting shelter

And he lived there in my truck for many days

As I traveled around picking up other survivors

He would lovingly greet them inside my old truck

But he just wouldn’t get out of it to cavort with them

He was so thankful for its warmth, and for his good luck

These days, this most appreciative and loving canine soul

Is still the happiest when he’s riding around town with me

I doubt that he’ll ever forget he got a second chance in life

And he gives his thanks and his love every day, so joyously

There Are Thousands of Loving Dogs Like Tater

In Animal Shelters, All Across This Vast Nation;

And Giving Even One of Them a Second Chance at Life

Truly Fills Both the Human and the Canine With Elation

Teehee, at first I thought the poem was about Taters, and all sorts of things went through my head, but....I see that Tater is a loving K9, who deserves to enjoy a nice homely dinner, as do so many other loving doggies and cats, n all animals...
Even my darling Sylvester who is on a stupid mission at the moment, wrecking the coverlet on our bed Grrrrrrrrr.
Hugs and blessings to you and Tater
Ch'erie

He is a magnificent dog with very bright, inquisitive eyes. I would love to have a dog or two, but not where we live. There are, may I say, STUPID ordinances and I have already reached the limit. They are so concerned about peoples pets roaming the streets. I have told them many times that some of us take our responsibility seriously and do not allow our pets to roam, but they say rules are rules. Maybe one day when we get to move from here we can have more pets again. Sometimes I wish we could move out further into the country and have a small farm.

Be safe,
Karen

He looks just like my Mom's faithful companion, "Hoss". I cried. I miss Hoss so much and he kept my mom happy as her vigilant companion after my father died. Thank you for bringing this today. It is warming.
Love and blessings,
Susan

Yes, Dr. Doolittle (I should call you Dr. DooMuch) You are the pied piper of the canine world, for sure. You shall be remembered for such humanity and unselfish acts of kindness.
I just adore you Mr. Ed, Dr. DooMuch,
Peace, Love, and Light,

Yes this is such a worthwhile endeavor but as most vets and people who run these shelters...make sure you are committed to looking after them for the long haul not just till the novelty wears off after Christmas and they end up back in the pound. Great story ED and truly moving.

You were truly God's ambassador of good will. You helped survivors, and gave Tater a loving home. He knew you would be a good friend when he spotted you. Critters seem to have that 'sense' about good or bad folks.

God bless you. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Kathy

Taters void has been filled with love and compassion,,, We need to fill many other voids in this world,,,,and filling them only gives us unconditional love in return. Beautiful write Ed,, makes tears come to my eyes thinking of the ones waiting for a home of their own.
