A Sad Follow-Up To

American Forest Blues

“Last night I had a crazy dream,

I didn’t ask for money,

Or a mansion in Malibu;

All I asked for,

Was one more day,

With you.”

Diamond Rio,

One More Day With You

Sadness truly filled both my heart and my soul

As I wandered a familiar country path yesterday

A forest that had stood here, since my childhood

Had suddenly vanished, it had been bulldozed away

I’ll never forget the day I first saw it

Almost fifty years ago, it has to be now

I had taken a train out here from the big city

How this forest had captivated me somehow

Gigantic green trees of every kind, shape, and size

Wondrous feathered creatures, singing in these trees

A myriad of glorious wildlife, scampering all about here

The fragrant smell of pine, in the lovely afternoon breeze

A truly splendid natural haven, provided by Earth’s Creator

A place harried city dwellers could go to relax and to unwind

But it seems the wondrous gifts He has given, are not appreciated

Instead of savoring Earth’s wonders, we treat them callously unkind

As I now stood on this barren hillside, in sadness and dismay

I soon spotted a garish sign, proclaiming its modern day news

‘Coming Soon, Right Here, A Fabulous New Shopping Mall’

Signs like these, these days, truly give me the Modern Day Blues

As I very sadly headed off back towards home

I glumly realized my dreams were being crushed

I now truly believe that we are killing our planet

In a blind, manic, greed-filled, modern day rush

Over half of Earth’s glorious forests,

Have already been bulldozed away;

And now, I very sadly have to wonder,

How many malls do we really need today?

“One more day, one more time,

One more glimpse, maybe I'd be satisfied;

But then again; I know what it would do,

It would leave me wishing still,

For just one more glorious day,

With you.”

I dont want to planet to become nothing but each and everyday I lose just a bit of hope that some mankind will see the mistakes and save Earth. I dont want this planet to turn to darkness but all I need to do is open my eyes and see that part of the Earth has already gone to darkness. Deforstation is very serious, we dont malls to live we need trees to live. Without trees we dont get any oxygen and than we cant live. What has come tho this planet were a mall is more important than keeping our life sustaining planet healthy and filled with trees. There is something worng with this palnet and I only hope that it can be fixed before it is to late. But it seems like that hope I have is meaningless and I want to say it isnt but I cant help but think that it is. Why wont mankind save our planet so the hopers of this world can know that it isnt a waste.

You know.........Mr. Ed - I really like your humor more - this is way too sad man! ;-)

I know exactly that sentiment - the forest I grew up playing in and where I rode horseback for hours and a day - each time another piece is torn down I cry a little. And, the wildlife - poor babies.

Fact is - so many new folks are coming to America - we really need to get busy on those biospheres.

Nice writ, ~D.

Look at the positive Ed, we'll have another big parking lot, Kate mentioned Joni Mitchell, she sang it a while back, soon we'll have to walk in virtual forests, Sony, and all the rest will be happy to sell you the disc. I can hear the questions now of future children and you did what? The biggest child abuse that's what it is, for we are taking that away from them, which has brought us so much happiness, not to speak of good health etc! Lot of people are quite happy to live in shopping malls to the bitter end! I don't wants to say no more for I gets upset.Blessings! Jasmin Horst

It's like we're living Orwell's 1984 but past it's sell-by date... Like Eileen, I envision a world where insular souls live in cyberspace, having everything at the push of a button and only venturing outside to go door-to-door to spend, spend, spend... I think we are all mummified already, thinking ourselves to be little gods buried away in our pyramids, gathering all our worldly goods to ourselves like gluttons. Is there a Big Yellow Taxi big enough to take all us Joni Mitchell types on the Fast-Rewind Trip? I've had enough of this Magical Mystery Tour into oblivion... That being said, here I am on the other side of the world, nattering on to you about it... !! I shall go hug my seven grand pines tomorrow morning, first thing... xx

I know what you are saying and how sad it is to see such beauty destroyed. I tell the children what once was and they an't imagine what once was. Thank you for sharing.

Know the feeling well. We had beautiful open land facing our back yard when we moved into this current house. It was so wonderful, I could not wait to move in. Tall trees, lush vegetation, privacy and a chance to sit outside in the early morning and glimse, observe and sometimes interact with the small wildlife that in abbundance. Then one morning woke up to the sounds of bulldozeers and shrieking birds.
Now there is nothing but a new road and a brick wall and I know not where all my little friends have gone....

Be always safe,
Karen

It is really frightening heartbreaking what we are doing on/to our Nation and Earth. Not only here, but in Ireland (Meath County) they are gouging the area of HILL OF TARA and Skryne Valley, Rath Lugh in particular, to build a freeway for the moneyed land and building promoters. Ancient artifacts have been bulldozed, along with ancient burial grounds, souterrain, relics of forts and buildings, and centuries old carved stones! ahhh...'tis such a sad, greedy world we line in!

Thanks for writing about the devistation in your part of our country, ED. We should ALL be aware of these happenings.

The ever glutinous society, and their Wal-Marts and malls.
It's appalling and yet doesn't surprise me, I've seen it
happen here in the Colorado Rockies, sickening.

I see it too everyday, tear down the old to put up the new, when the old would do just fine if it were remodeled, rather than make new malls and such using places like the place you spoke of here...they better not take my Pine's away though they are encroaching more and more each and every day...JD

At this pace, it will be no wood left to make another cross...

Mr Ed,

The grand forests and woods from our youth are being cut down for man's "progress" - how far have we progressed when we keep taking from Mother Nature? What will happen when there are no more trees? No more animals? No more water? No more air? No more - man. Something to think about, reading these heartbreaking lines - well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
