Each and every year, as Memorial Day now approaches
I remember veteran cemeteries I’ve visited over the years
They contain over three million of America’s bravest souls
They are places filled with the echoes of far too many tears
They are the final resting places in our vast nation
Of our grandfathers, fathers, sons, brothers, and friends
They are the places that we should be visiting far more often
They harbor the remains of those who gave their all without end
There are over 17,000 acres of their grave markers in America
And over 140 of these extremely somber soldier resting places
From our very first Revolutionary War to our present war in Iraq
Soldiers of each of America’s many diverse nationalities and races
I lost several of my own relatives in World War II
I lost far too many of my friends in that war in Vietnam
And today, we are sadly losing far too many young soldiers
In both Iraq and in Afghanistan, to those deadly roadside bombs
Please take some time, this long Memorial Day weekend
To visit a state or a national veteran cemetery near your home
Wear your Buddy Poppy, and place some flowers on a gravestone
Remember their ultimate sacrifice, and perhaps recite a soldier’s poem
Over Three Million Brave Souls,
Who Have Died For You and Me;

i too have lost relatives/friends in each major u.s. military conflict/engagement. i pray for their immortal souls. i pray, too, that our "leaders" will soon see the light of peace & reason. greed must be held in check before the bullets fly...
