-Still Wandering Through My Photo Albums-

More than two thousand long years ago

A figure of mystery appeared in America’s Southwest

And many through the centuries have been fascinated by him

But very much still remains unknown about his ancient quest

Some say that he was a simple man

Who loved to laugh, and to sing, and to play

Others believe he was an immortal deity with a mission

And they still attempt to unravel his ancient messages today

Some say that he was a very young man

Who in reality, was a traveling womanizer

Some claim that he was a sage old hunchbacked god

Who cared little for love affairs and who was much wiser

Some claim that he walked for thousands of dusty miles

Spreading love, good cheer, and extremely melodic tunes

Some believe that he was born somewhere down in Mexico

Others say that he hailed from an ancient civilization in Peru

Some believe that he was a stranded ancient mariner

Somehow shipwrecked off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico

Who had soon decided to make the best of the rest of his life

Wandering this land sharing his wisdom wherever he would go

Some believe he was an ancient traveling salesman

Bartering many goods as he journeyed along his way

Perhaps trading seashells, and jewelry, and animal pelts

For his next meal or for his next place for the night to stay

Some believe he was a mysterious immortal shape shifter

Who had the ability to change into insect and animal form

Some also believe that he was a very great musician

Traveling these vast distances so that he could perform

Most believe he traveled far and wide

Carrying a heavy pack upon his back

But much debate still exists today

About exactly what was in that sack

Some say that he carried succulent corn and squash seeds

Offering to help plant them to any who gave him hospitality

Others claim that he carried skillfully crafted wooden flutes

That he taught so many people how to play with so much glee

Some believe that he actually carried magical fertility drugs

So the men he met on his travels could impregnate their wives

Others claim that he really carried extremely important messages

From the ancient deities on how we mortals could lead better lives

Since this mysterious figure lived long before the days of recorded history

Modern mankind will never really know who or what this ancient traveler was

But you can find his likeness carefully etched into hundreds of ancient drawings

From the mountains of Colorado, all the way down to the jungles of old Mexico

And on my many travels around the southwestern part of North America

I always search for his image on petroglyphs with both fascination and glee

Because as I gaze upon these captivating old pictures of him on these stones

I somehow hear the enchanting timeless flute music of the one called Kokopelli

This Ancient One, who lived long before our recorded history

Is revered by Native Americans, and many to meet him do yearn

If he were to walk amongst us in this troubled world we now live in

Perhaps he could teach us a better way – Perhaps, we might even learn

The one called Kokopelli says to thank you for your words, and if you had any doubts he is immortal, come out at night on the prairie and he will play a tune for you, the wind will carry it, or so he said.
