Can Common Sense Overcome Greed and Stupidity?
Alas, the ancient Oil Gods did not bestow favor on America
Our vast nation contains only 3 percent of all of the world’s oil
Yet, we in the U.S., consume 25 percent of all oil now produced
So, I think we will continue to be at the mercy of Mideast Royals
Yet, many of our very savvy U.S. leaders today are proclaiming
That brand new offshore drilling in America, will now save the day
I definitely know that I’m far from being any mathematics wizard
But I just cannot get these numbers to add up – in any logical way
So, let’s all try doin ‘The Oil Dance’ numbers, just one more time
Our nation only contains about three percent of all the oil in the world
Yet, this new offshore drilling, that our leaders are touting everyday now
Is somehow going to make an ‘Oil Independent America’ magically unfurl
Somehow, they are claiming that offshore drilling, will give us ‘cheap gas’
And that we will no longer be at the mercy, of oil rich nations in the Mideast
They must have discovered some fabulous new type of modern day mathematics
So, if anyone out there knows what the hell they are saying, Enlighten Me, Please!
In point of fact, the United States is becoming ever more dependent upon imported oil today, because we have very stubbornly, and very foolishly, refused to give up our ‘oil based economy’ and pursue other alternative methods of energy.
A mere thirty years ago, 28 percent of the oil consumed in the United States was imported. Today, over 60 percent of all the oil utilized and consumed in the United States each and every day is imported from other countries.
Oil imports into the United States from Saudi Arabia come in at over 160 million barrels of crude oil annually. And we import about the same huge amount of oil from both Mexico and Canada as we do from Saudi Arabia on an annual basis.
Other countries which we also now have to import oil from are: Venezuela, Nigeria, Iraq, the United Kingdom, Norway, Angola, Algeria, and Colombia.
And, of course, oil is now becoming an extremely limited and extremely coveted resource. And by far, the bulk of the proven, remaining, oil reserves in the world today are located in the Middle East. That’s a simple geological fact.
The amount of oil in the Middle East far exceeds what is still available today, anywhere else on Earth.
So Back To My Math Problem:
We Can Ruin Our Beautiful Coastlines,
Dredge Up Our Very Measly Three Percent,
And Still Be Far Short of What We Need, Right Now,
Since We Consume 25 Percent of Earth’s Available Oil Today,
And Yet, We Will Somehow Become an ‘Oil Independent America.’
I guess I’m just stupid;
I just can’t figure this out.
But Thank God That We Have Leaders,
Who Really Know This New Modern Math.
But I sure can’t wait,
For those cheap gasoline prices,
That are sure to be on the way soon.

Thank God, someone here at AD has the talent and guts to put the argument in publishable form - instead of ranting on to nobody like myself
And Americans have shown time and again that they will put their common sense away during election years. This time we will pay dearly if we don't demand they come clean with the truth about OIL

I passed the Shell station this morning and saw gas was priced at $4.09. Thinking I'd fill up on the way home, when I returned, it had gone up an addtional four cents per gallon.
Americans in the upper echelons of society with decent wages will manage to survive. But the poor people working for minimum wage, trying to support a family and keep a roof over their heads are the ones who are going to suffer. We will eventually have more homeless people, more applying for welfare benefits, more crime, and the list continues...
Do we have a bunch of dunces in our government?
