“There’s a whisper on the night wind,

There’s a star agleam to guide us;

And The Wild is calling, calling…

Let us go.”

Robert W. Service

It’s a truly lovely summer’s night

On The Great Backyard Campout

My spouse and dogs are fast asleep

I gaze skyward, and I peer all about

I soon spot a very old friend

Shining very brightly in the sky

As I gaze upon this northern star

I recall it guiding me many a time

I have often utilized it in the great northwood

To find my way in the deep dark forest at night

And I have followed it on huge wilderness lakes

Enabling me to find my moorings with little fright

Many a traveler and sailor have relied on Polaris

To guide them, so steadfastly back to their homes

Many an old legend revolves around the North Star

And many a poet about this star, have written poems

As I continued gazing up at my old friend

I recalled a very old Native American legend

About a young man, who had climbed a mountain

Wanting to demonstrate he had courage with no end

This very young brave climbed as high as he possibly could

And soon, he found himself atop the highest peak in the land

But now, he found that there was no way to climb back down

So the gods made him into the North Star, with a view so grand

And after all these many centuries, he remains there diligently on duty

Assisting anyone who might need his help, with his extremely bright light

I truly love these very captivating and fascinating old Native American tales

And to my old friend, Polaris, as I began dozing off, I bid a Very Good Night

The North Star, often referred to as Polaris or Lodestar, has been the trusty guide to many a navigator in the Northern Hemisphere for many an eon now. Gazing up into its brilliant direction in the dark will always point you due north, and it will always help you find your way back home, no matter how far you may have wandered away from those you love.

It had been a truly lovely summer’s night,

On The Great American Backyard Campout;

My spouse and dogs were already fast asleep,

As I began gazing skyward, peering all about.

I hope that North Star will not look down and see murky dead oceans and a bunch of Continents covered with sand dunes.

That Backyard Campout is surely grand; I miss those- fondly remember one in Vermont in 1983 to the lullaby of haunting nightsounds. Perhaps I'll get one again up there. Your poems always get me to thinking of fond memories: was "Pondering Polaris" (great title!) April 27th, the last night I spent with my dear old cat out in my driveway... At least my skies, like yours are not washed out by man's "city lights" anymore...
Later, michael

ED - SUPERB MULTI-FACETED TALE!

While I never really learned to find or read the stars, I know that The NORTH Star has been a perennial BOON to mankind - no matter what its origin!

Peace - Tom.

Such a beautifully written, poem!Your love of nature and all things comes through so vividly... I have to wonder how anyone can
doubt Creator when Polaris could only have been created, to serve the purpose it does. All of creation serves a purpose and that can't happen by accident! Thanks for this gem, ED!... Tiger Lily

It is a wonder how far you can go if you just follow the stars. Beautifu. And the music lends its offering to the tale.

Such a beautiful and inspiring write my friend, very gentle, and captivating. I loved the legend...I hadn't heard this one, I will anxiously pass this legend along to my students as there are many opporutunities, when we study Native Americans, the art of story, and even when we study the solar system. You can tell I've been thinking about the beginning of a new and exciting year...loved this poem my friend and the music was great! Bravo dear poet!
