Sadly Inspired By a Trip To The City,

A Place I Truly Hate Going These Days

“Science may have found cures

For many evils;

But it has found no remedy,

For the worst of them all:

The apathy of human beings.”

Helen Keller

Music: Road To Hell

As I wander this vast country of ours

My heart grows a bit sadder every day

We have become a ‘self absorbed’ people

And our apathy now grows in so many ways

We have become a nation of modern ‘lip service slogans’

We seem to think that our bumper stickers are all we need

We have cocooned ourselves into some sort of dream world

We are now consumed with our own welfare, and with greed

As I saunter down a congested, noisy, garbage riddled, city street

I see a yellow Hummer, with a fine ‘Support Our Troops’ Decal

The driver, very weary of fighting traffic, and late for an appointment

Almost runs down a homeless, one-armed vet, yelling “Get a Job, Pal!”

Next, I watch a self-absorbed parent, with a puppy and a young child

He’s upset they’re not rushing, so he forcefully yanks the dog’s chain

The puppy yelps in agony on his ‘Anti-Cruelty Society’ provided leash

And tears run down the boy’s face, his father oblivious to his son’s pain

And soon, I spot a mini-van, with a very colorful ‘Save Our Planet’ Decal

A mom is trying to discipline four children, who won’t eat their ‘Happy Meals’

As her frustration mounts, and her kids begin screaming at the top of their lungs

She tosses all of their soft drink cups out the window, and takes off with a squeal

As I pass an old park, one of my favorite childhood haunts, so many years ago

An old man on a park bench is upset that children are hurling rocks at pigeons

In his frustration, he flags down a policeman, in his ‘Serve and Protect’ vehicle

Who curtly says, “Don’t worry about it, old man; they’ll just keep doin it again.”

As I get back into my own vehicle, for the agonizing ‘rush hour’ trip home

I sadly realize how pitiful our modern day human condition has now become

And as I ponder what today’s children are learning from our adult ‘role models’

My hopes for our future weaken; my heart and soul, grow ever colder and numb

And our politicians today, are masters of ‘lip service slogans,’

Very carefully preparing them, for all those media sound bites;

Yet, they rarely take any action these days to make things better,

But how they love spouting lip service slogans, with such delight.

We have evolved into modern beings with ‘lip service lives,’

We seem to think that our bumper stickers, are all we need;

We have cocooned ourselves into some sort of dream world;

We are now consumed with our own welfare, and with greed.

Such a shame that lip service pertains to smart mouthery these days, intead of the love shared between two individuals once upon a yesteryear... Though a sad tale, enjoyed it very much, truthful words indeed. Ty Ch'erie

Things like this just boil my blood as I stated the other day in one of my poems, it doesn't cost a thing to be nice, smile and say a kind word. You never know he/she could have been the reason our son/daughter or parent came back home alive. How can people get so wrapped up in their own life that they turn cold and angry towards another Human being. Thank you Ed, I sure wish there was a way to open up people's eyes.

Ed, you are a very observing person, I've seen everyone of these type things happen too and it really makes one sick at their stomach. Sometimes I feel like so many people are caught up in their own world and don't consider "no" one else, not even their own children. It's such a fast pace world with people running in so many directions, not bothering to teach their children respect for anyone or anything. After fighting the daily romp, people are so worn out, they could care less what happens in their lives. I watch it every day here in this fast paced city I live in. People getting fast food, running to get one child to dance lessons, another to piano, and yet, another to soccer - their lives our spread so thin, they mess it all up. This is an excellent write, one to remind people to pay attention to their families & to slow down in life.

This is such a powerful and sadly true write about the human state of mankind and how low we have fallen from the Norman Rockwell small town everyone help your neighbour of yesterday to the Fuck You big city attitudes of today that now run rampart everywhere.

Very true and your words hit home. We have become a self absorbed society. Perhaps too many count on the various agencies they give pledge to handle the dirty work so all can go on their memory way feeling better about themselves. After all, it takes time, energy and giving of oneself to help another in need.....

Be always safe,
Karen

Ed, what you have written is so very truthful and just by reading the wonderful comments left by fellow AD writers, the thought just ocurred to me that we're going about changing the world, in the wrong way.

Instead of looking at each catastrophie as overwhelming, why couldn't we, humans, just try doing one little thing and working on whatever it is, until it's done, then move on to another challlenge, I think it would be more effective everytime we swung the bat to have consistently hit singles and causing change, then to try to hit home runs every time we get up to bat.

Excellent write, keep them coming.
Cheers,
Dan

My hopes for our future weaken; my heart and soul, grow ever colder and numb

I hope that your heart never grows too cold or numb because if you/ me do we'll become just as greedy and self-obsorbed as the rest.
Anyone who would yell to a war vet, “Get a Job, Pal!” has no heart!
God Bless Ed, Holly

Does anyone take the time to write their Congress men/women? Do they even KNOW how to contact them?? How about their State legislatures? When I write to mine (over 70 so far this year) I cc my Governor...always a need-to-know basis. And if I don't get the reply I want, I re-write them! Easier now on 'puter, but snail mail is important, too.
Appreciate ALL your efforts by writing these poems, Ed...

Damn Ed, nothing like reminding me of the very thing I do every now and then, though mostly I ignore other aggressive drivers...but sometimes, even with a peace sign on the back of the Jeep, I still get pissed off and let them know it by hand signals...I keep tryin to change, but sometimes and with some people, it is very hard to accomplish...good reminder herein...Ed

Ed, you really painted a grim picture with this one, but I have to say it is an excellent write. I don't know why people have become such a tempermental society and I don't know what the cure is. But I do know that children just aren't taught good moral behavior like they were when I was a child.

Often I hear someone say, "I don't give a damn what anybody thinks." That is a disease initself. When we stop caring what others think, we stop having respect for others, and we eventually lose respect for ourselves--and our actions show it--and are passed on to the children.

Parents need to teach the children to do the right things. But they don't. WE are greedy people and only think of ourselves. We could help clean up this world, the language used by youngster is annoying to me, the drug usage amongst young children is sore thing with me, the parents wanted these children, why do they not put on a clean life for them to see and not watch their parents destroy themselves.
Smoking is a sore thing with me cause Tom killed himself by excessively smoking. All peoples need to find God and try to live accordingly. He will help them in their habits if they only pray for him to do good with them. Our schools aren't the same anymore either, not safe at all, with guns, knives and whatever. I could go on and on but will stop here. God help us, we surely do need it.

Our politicians, parents, teachers are the educators: who's teaching the children? They only learn what they see ... and what they see ain' pretty. It says in the Bible, in the last days, the love of many will wax cold - we're seeing it, we're seeing it - God help us! I agree, one of your best -
