“Never lose an opportunity to see anything that is beautiful.

It is God’s handwriting – a wayside sacrament.

Welcome it in every face, every sky, every flower.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I seem to have another visitor

He arrived just the other night

As I was gazing up at the stars

And this fella is quite a delight

I’ve been fascinated with opossums

Since I was a very tiny tyke in school

As the only marsupial in North America

I think these furry creatures are very cool

They have been around since dinosaurs roamed

The Algonquin Indians named them ‘Apasums’

Which translated means: ‘white-faced animals’

Today, I still love watching them ‘playin possum’

This little fella had come in for a drink of cool water

He had snuck into my yard, in the middle of the night

And when I shined my flashlight on him while he sipped

He immediately ‘played dead’ until he knew it was alright

But once he had decided that I wasn’t going to harm him

His shyness soon vanished, and he started eating bird seed

Now, every night, as I sprawl out, under the old maple tree

He happily climbs my fence, creeping out from under weeds

I often released his kind from deadly traps where I worked

And for doing that, I always received a reprimand or two

Why we human beings insist on killing anything not like us

I will never comprehend, until my days on Earth are through

Many people don’t care too much for these harmless critters

But my nightly visitor, is now most welcome in my little yard

Opossums are very skilled masters at insect and rodent control

So now, after he drinks some water, we both gaze up at the stars

Of course, my four old dogs don’t care very much for our furry visitor

They now all growl, and bark, and stare, through a basement window

But I have to laugh as my now bold little opossum buddy teases them

Before he climbs back over the fence, right in front of them, he strolls

your poignant words, "Why we human beings insist on killing anything not like us I will never comprehend, until my days on Earth are through" stand out with so much truth

Gotta love all these little furry four leggers, they were here long before us and most have a true purpose that is far more important than ours on this earth.

I think he's cute! We have our fair share of his kinfolk that roam around our farm...one once got on my sister's back porch, she's not quite as tollerant of animals as I am anyway she didn't want to hurt it, but just wanted it off her porch so she proceeded to toss oranges at it trying to get it to leave her porch, she called me and I told her that it would only play dead until she went back inside and then it might leave. It did finally leave her porch, only to go to it's nest under her house where it had about seven little babies! Finally she had someone come with a live trap and caught the mommy and all the babies and released them into the woods where they could be free, and free of flying oranges! Enjoyed this this write my friend!

Neat-o. Love how tender-hearted you are, Nature Man. {Doesn't have the ring that Nature Boy does, but in my book, it takes a real man to show his soft side. Care about critturs, 'n' such.} 'possums aren't
my fave, but I admit they are fascinating. All us ani-mules are! {Uh, oh. Here comes another postscript: I don't like it when people call cruel individuals "animals." Not sure about that "lower" bit. Humans. . .you get my drift.) Thank you for continuing to entertain and educate us as only you can do. xOx Phyllis xOx

Nice poem about the opossom. I have a wooded area behind my house and throw my table scraps over the fence. It draws all the critters and the opossom is among them.

Every night, I have some animal come to either my front door, back door, or both, and drop one or two large pellets. Do you know what kind of animal it could be. I'm so tried of having to sweep my mats every day before I step outside.

All God's creatures are here for a reason and you explained this in this write. How the opossum is a valuable animal to some and should be protected. I see lots killed on the highways and am so sad when I see their snout in the air and laying their so still. I get tears in my eyes. Glad you are enjoying this cute, yes cute, little fellow.

I had a pet possum once (until my father released it back into the wild). Poor things. A lot of them get hit by cars around here at night. I love the way you share your kinship with nature, Mr. Ed. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you,

Sounds to me like he is a cleaver little critter. I love most animals and I would never hurt any. I use to toss an apple to the skunks when we lived in Prince Edward Island and watch them toss it about,my husband got upset when they started to come to the screen door with theirnose snipping as I was cooking supper. Thank you for sharing Ed.

It's wonderful about your relationships with our furry friends. But it is also a tragedy about the way man treats them. Wonderful poem. Enjoyed.
