I didn’t know whether I should laugh or I should cry
When I heard Senator John McCain recently proclaim:
“Senator Obama has short-changed our wounded troops;
He didn’t visit them in Germany; what a terrible shame.”
Yet, it was this very same Senator McCain, and our Commander-in-Chief
Who were the two greatest short-changing opponents of the new G.I. Bill
Authorizing the funds to actually enable our valiant soldiers to attend college
Was something they utterly disdained; for them, it was an extremely bitter pill
Yet numerous Internet bloggers and chat rooms soon jumped on their political bandwagon
Very eagerly pouncing on Senator Obama for not visiting our wounded troops in Germany
Many American citizens seem to agree with these two, that our soldiers should be visited
But when they return home, both these two and most Americans, abandon them with glee
I’m still sadly waiting for the great public outrage and indignation
That our veterans’ disability claims have a backlog, much too long
And I’m still waiting for the very immense public hue and outcry
That every day now, thousands of our veterans are being wronged
But all I hear is silence, concerning their abysmal waits for medical care
And even more silence, concerning our 200,000 jobless and homeless vets
I’m still waiting for public outrage and indignation, concerning veteran suicides
Over 18 a day now, the highest veteran suicide rate in our nation’s history yet
And I’m still sadly waiting for all of these extremely concerned bloggers and citizens
To speak out against this administration, for using our valiant veterans as ‘guinea pigs’
In a ‘stop-smoking campaign’ sponsored by a billion dollar pharmaceutical corporation
Which increased our horrendous veteran suicide rate, and made company coffers so big
But God forbid if Senator Obama neglects to stop and chat with a soldier,
On his journey back to the Midwest, and on to his home, back in Chicago;
“Would you really want this short-changer to be our Commander-in-Chief?”
And on and on and on, these very concerned and very outraged, citizens will go
What a truly naïve nation, we have very sadly become today,
And truly immense today, should be our horrendous national shame;
We condone politicians short-changing our soldiers and veterans every day,
As they play their extremely callous, shameful, never-ending, political games.
