Sadly Reminiscing
About my days in D.C.,
Each and Every August,
Not one ‘leader,’ did I see.
The very brutal days of heat and humidity
Return to the Capitol of these United States
A hush has again fallen on once hallowed halls
To leave, our esteemed politicians, couldn’t wait
They’ve five weeks, of luxurious paid vacations
While our nation, faces so many problems today
Once upon a time, as I roamed this place in August
I always sadly wondered how they took time to play
So many problems are still plaguing our once great nation
So very much hard work, which all of them need to get done
And as I wandered this silent and abandoned place each August
I always shook my head, while our politicians rejoiced in their fun
On my very last official journey to Washington, on a muggy August night
I came upon some homeless veterans, sleeping on the steps of our Capitol
As they all pondered where they might get their next meal the next morning
I walked along a very deserted Washington thoroughfare, sadness in my soul
And I left on the next available jet plane,
Vowing to this place, I would never return;
For the good old days, when I still had hope,
Today, how my saddened old heart truly yearns.
And now, it’s been a year since that tragic bridge collapse,
When so many in Minnesota, lost their lives that August day;
No action’s been taken, as our nation’s infrastructure decays,
But our so called leaders in August, still find five weeks, to play.
And three years ago, when Katrina roared in on that August day,
Our leaders, including our President, were all on their vacations;
I have now given up hoping that better days are ahead for America,
I find less and less positive things these days, and less and less elation.
The last ‘leader’ rushing out those doors above,
Should at least have the decency to dim the lights;
Only sad old fools like me, still stand out there now,
Still shaking their heads, these very sad August nights.
But perhaps, I’m extremely naďve and old fashioned,
Expecting today’s ‘leaders’ to believe in hard work, too;
With all their fine fringe benefits, and their lengthy vacations,
I doubt very many of them at all these days, are singin the blues.
How much vacation time do you receive?
The number of recesses in D.C. – is hard to believe.
And our current President,
Holds the record,
For the most White House vacations,
In U.S. history.

Me, I was alway taught family and work first before any play....

This country is in need of repair,
And to do so, no one is out there,
As for vets it just ain't fair,
Better for them to have died, over there...e & R
