I have been fascinated by Earth’s whales
Since I was a very young child in school
I’ve been on whale watching expeditions
I’ve even had the chance to touch a few
But these wondrous denizens of our oceans
Are much closer to vanishing forever, today
And one particular type of whale, we wrong
Now draws nearer to annihilation, every day
When I first wrote an article about this whale
There were only about 1,000 left, back in 2004
Now, I’ve just learned a truly horrifying bit of news
There are only about 300 of them left – and no more
And over the last eight very abysmal years in our government
Our leaders have so very callously refused to come to their aid
The very few, still somehow surviving, North Atlantic Right Whales
Are dying from collisions with our speeding ships in our shipping lanes
And these few remaining Right Whales are supposed to be protected
Under both the Endangered Species Act and The Marine Mammal Act
But our current administration has continuously refused to assist them
Not placing limits on any and all shipping speeds in Right Whale habitat
And I’ve really grown extremely tired of all who still condone today’s leadership
And of all those who still haughtily proclaim that we’re not killing species or habitat
This whale once numbered in the millions, was down to a thousand, a few years ago
Now, there are only a little more than 300 left - how hard is it, to do some simple math?
Right Whales were so named by early whalers because they were just the ‘right’ whale to kill — they’re extremely slow swimmers, they’re very easily harpooned, and they float when dead.
And today, Earth’s few remaining endangered Right Whales are supposed to be protected internationally.
But today, these extremely gentle, ever dwindling, sea creatures can be found swimming and giving birth near our large Atlantic ports, in both Canadian and American waters, where they far too often become entangled in fishing nets and drown; and where, very sadly, they routinely collide with our speeding ships, and our leaders have taken absolutely no action to protect them, despite numerous requests from numerous environmental groups.
And in these collisions with fast moving ships, these extremely wronged Right Whales, never win.
Wake Up, America and Canada,
Before It Becomes Much Too Late;
It’s Now Way Past Time, For A Change,
Our Dying Planet, Has No Time Left To Wait.
It Seems We Can’t Even Slow Down a Bit,
To Save a God-given Creature from Extinction;
Hurling Earth Faster and Faster Towards Doom,
May Be Our Modern Day’s Horrendous Distinction.
