“It is good to be alone in a garden at dawn or at dark,

So that all its presences may haunt you and possess you,

In a reverie of suspended thought.”

James Douglas

I haven’t walked in her lovely garden

Since I was about twenty years of age

But I can still sense her presence in mine

I heard whispers in the wind just yesterday

“Edju, don’t forget to feed the birds,

The flowers need some watering, too;

And don’t forget to prune those bushes,

If you nurture nature, it will nurture you.”

How I loved listening to her wisdom

All those many long gone years ago

How I still miss watching her work

How I loved her wondrous garden so

“Edju, can you please bring me that watering can?

Have I showed you how to tend to these tomatoes?

It will soon be time to start canning vegetables again,

Now, where in the world did all those mason jars go?”

From the time that I was about three years old

Until the time I finally left our old homestead

Every moment that I spent in our old backyard

Was memorable in her vegetable and flowerbeds

“Edju, I want you to have this old gardening book,

You will never find another fine old spade like this;

Always keep a statue of good old St. Francis around,

That man truly knew how to enjoy God’s natural bliss.”

To this day, I use many of the tools that she gave me

And I still try to remember her marvelous gardening tips

Keeping many of her old books, and statues, and feeders

Has made every garden I’ve had since, a little place of bliss

I haven’t walked in my grandmother’s old garden,

Since back, when I was about twenty years of age;

But I can somehow still sense her presence in mine,

I know I heard her whispers in the wind, just yesterday.

great flashback memory verse Ed, I can still remember my grandfathers garden beside the house in the woods. He grew a garden where nobody else could get anything to grow, and he guarded it with his 38 caliber, better not walk or take nothing from that garden without permission

You and I here bro' definitely differ as I can't even grow grass without killing it...I most assuredly have a black thumb or maybe it is just that I have not the patience to grow things...you on the other seem to know alot about gardens and such...your grandmother must have been quite the woman, especially having to put up with you throughout your younger years...Find Peace in that garden, Ed & rufuz
