A new bill has been introduced in Congress, by Representatives Conyers & Burton
House of Representatives No. 6598, The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008
This bill prohibits the slaughter of American horses, for export and human consumption
It will stop our many horses from being dragged across our borders to such a hideous fate

Prior to the closure of all three foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the U.S., (two in Texas, and one in Illinois) over 100,000 American horses a year were being slaughtered, right here in the United States, so they could be processed for human consumption overseas.
We thought we had finally stopped this hideous cruelty by getting these three U.S. slaughterhouses shut down; but of course, ruthless people in search of a quick dollar very quickly found a way around this.
And now today, tens of thousands of American horses are being transported across our borders to Mexico and to Canada, for continued slaughter for overseas human consumption. And some of these horses are America’s once revered national treasures – our Wild Mustangs. Our own government is rounding up thousands of our wild horses for slaughter, right now.
And after these horses are now killed in Mexico or in Canada, their flesh is still being shipped to Europe and to Asia, for someone’s dinner table.
And most Americans today are not even aware of the terrible suffering these American horses must now endure, before being butchered in a foreign slaughterhouse. They are cramped into double-decked trucks; often driven hundreds of miles; and, of course, not given any food or water along the way, since they travel to their deaths.

And when you call, you will most likely speak to a staff member, who will hopefully pass your message on to your legislators. And please leave your name and address, so it’s clear that you are a constituent.

As a constituent, I'm calling to strongly urge [Representative's name] to co-sponsor H.R. 6598, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008, a bill to prevent our horses from being cruelly dragged across our borders, to be butchered in foreign slaughterhouses for foreign human consumption. Our American horses deserve much better. Thank you."
