The Definition of ‘Tree Hugger,’

From The Urban Dictionary

‘An environmentalist:

One who believes that all living things,

Including trees and animals, have merit.

Someone who works to protect the environment,

From destruction or pollution.’

What I see with my own two eyes

Truly saddens me these dark days

Kids have lost all respect for nature

We need more Tree Huggers today

As I walked past a grade school recently

I saw little ones tossing rocks at squirrels

As I walked past a high school soon after

I witnessed a truly atrocious scene unfurl

Teen-aged girls were breaking tree limbs

And they were tossing them in the street

When I stopped, and I asked them ‘Why’

They had a blank stare, shuffling their feet

“Uh, I guess we’re all just kinda bored”

One of these teen girls finally admitted

Then they laughed, and they all raced off

Never realizing the damage they committed

An entire block of carefully planted trees

Had now been severely damaged and ruined

And I’d bet that the next time they get bored

They’ll attack some more trees near that school

As for those rock throwing kids from that grade school

When I asked them why towards squirrels they were cruel

They looked at me very oddly, as if I were from outer space

“We like to make them jump around, don’t you know that’s cool?”

As a child, my teachers, parents, and grandparents

Had all taught me to respect both animals and trees

And no matter how mischievous I might have been

I never sought any pleasure in harming any of these

And these sad days, I now very sadly watch

Youngsters tossing trash, anywhere they please

On our sidewalks, in the parks, on the lakeshores

In the forests, among our green shrubbery and trees

I don’t know what today’s children are learning from adults

But I doubt they find very many adult ‘tree huggers’ today

Today’s children are growing up in a callous environment

And our childhood experiences, mold us in so many ways

What I see with my own two eyes,

Truly saddens me these dark days;

Kids have lost all respect for nature,

We need more Tree Huggers today.

And Our Children Today,

Need Better Adult Role Models;

We truly need tree huggers today, dear ED. Let us be good as adults, children will replicate our behaviours into real action. Excellent write

All so true and so sad Ed! You would think that with all the many things there are to do today with all the new technology etc that kids wouldn't be bored enough to have to ruin their neighborhoods by destroying nature and animals. Yet they are doing it more so now than ever. The reason is that we are seeing a much meaner and uncaring society than ever before. Kids are so inured to violence on TV and all entertainment venues, that they no longer fear or care about how they hurt others or even themselves. We have failed our youth,by not teaching them the standards and morality that we learned as children. Excellent write Ed! tiger lily

It seems I am guided to read certain writings on AD. Your title caught my attention...as I am the parent of a "tree hugger" Eli has been hugging and whispering to trees for 25 years now. Disrespect of nature is and the earth is rampant. The earth is GODs painting and we need to protect and respect it! I hope your wonderful writing brings realization to all.

It makes us wonder if those children have any feelings. I was taught if it breathes and if it grows, it has feelings. Very sad Ed. Thank you for sharing.

My eyes cry for this sad children, and my eyes see red for the parents that have not instilled goodness toward our Mother Earth in them...How is this all going to play out? It is way too much to even ponder. I am growing tired and weary from all of this unpleasantry, what can we do to change this sad mess? Awesome poem, to open one's eyes to all of this. Thanks my tree hugger friend,
Peace, love, and light,

For the most part, I see with my eyes that most of the kids today have NO parental input with regards ANYTHING...the parents today feel that if the kids grow up and not get arrested or use drugs, they are doing their jobs, even though their children are mostly wild and have little respect for anything and ANYBODY...to those few parents that have tried to instill respect for all things, human & animal and plant, I thank you all, even though once in school, the teachers as well don't teach them anything, beyond what they are supposed to in the classroom...that is not enough...Ed & Rufuz

Without a tree where would we be? The value system today is all turned around, life giving and life enriching values are deminished everywhere, but you are right, "one times one" taught in school is not important if it's used for callous destruction, a school class should start with breathing excercises, and an explanation, of the gift of breath, which without trees there would be none, only one of the hundred of values trees give us, I just wish, we as a species, would give as much, or even a fraction thereof, and as for Keith I agree wholeheartedly, where trees give as air to breeze, dogs teach and give unconditional love, there too I'd wish we as a species be as generous and give only a fraction thereof back. I did not want to spend too much time on the net, but your most important article, needed a reply my friend , Thank God there are still some like you among us, Blessings! Jasmin Horst

"I saw little ones tossing rocks at squirrels"

And so we weep for the suffering our kind inflict.

Like Frederick the Great (and I make no claim to greatness), I prefer dogs to humans. I have no time, love or forgiveness for these human savages.

Your truth deepens my despair.

"And Our Children Today,
Need Better Adult Role Models;"
and in the last 8 years when they SEE the leader of their country, exploit nature and kill animals for only the value of "money" they of course grow up with the attitude that "if it's in your way or provides you plesure" anything goes. And not just leaders, it's in the media and in the movies and on their computer games & in their music...
I must be a throwback: I thought artisitc expression was created for something else... I've always been proud to be a "Tree Hugger" but unless I can influence kids (the next gen. I fear)
PS: I thanked my Morning Glories this morning...

Sad indeed but all we can do as parents and grandparents is keep on teaching and hope somewhere down the line some of them will listen and it will make a difference. People said the sixties kids were radicals and they wouldn't make a difference in the scheme of things...look what changes came about because of them...we all just have to keep on trying to teach and set examples for each progressive generation...

Such a poignant write about our world as it is. It is hard to fathom why someone, child, adult, or inbetween would want to harm things the way you describe. A man the other day told me hunted, not for food, but for fun! So yes, I join you as a tree hugger, and wish more would.

Oh this lovely sad touching write makes me want to go hug a tree, matter of fact, I'm going to do just that. My neighbors are going to think I've finally gone mad but maybe, just maybe they might take the hint and hug one for themselves. You just might have started something with you words my friend. Love, Bonnie

Indeed, Ed, the world needs more that respect Nature and all her creatures. The other day, Karen and I were waiting for our ride to church, and a squirrel went running in front of us, to shelter in a tree ... we just smiled and talked to Mr. Squirrel. :) I fear for our children, I fear for Nature: excellent, heartbreaking write of apathy.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I still hug trees. :)
