“The melancholy days have come,

The saddest of the year,

Of wailing winds and naked woods,

And meadows brown and sear.”

William Cullen Bryant

There’s a rustlin in the wind

As I head down a country lane

There’s a frosty chill in the air

And surely Autumn’s here again

A big brown antlered deer

Darts from the tangled brush

Geese are a honkin and a flappin

Now a flyin southward in a rush

Squirrels are a gatherin

Tiny chipmunks are too

Knowin Old Man Winter

Will be arrivin here soon

The cricket’s song is over

The bullfrog’s gone away

The groundhog is burrowin

He’s got no time left to play

I stop on my journey to watch

Tiny black ants a tunnelin deep

They’re a headin underground

Where all winter they will keep

The leaves are turnin brown now

And they’re a fallin to the ground

The birds now sit glum and silent

Nary a one is makin nary a sound

The tiny babblin brook

Murmurs a very sad tune

I believe that just like me

It too now yearns for June

A touch of sadness fills the air

As I slowly head back on home

And now I’m a hopin and a prayin

That next Spring, this way, I’ll roam

Ed, you almost convinced me as to the sadness of the Autumnal season, then I remembered how delightful it is not to have 100 deg. weather...'tho still a bit warm here (low 90s), and greenery everywhere. I still enjoy the starkness of late Fall, and of course Wintertime. It's all relevancy, I suppose...LOL

The new season cycles once again and fond memories of the season before remain in our heads. What a lovely piece that says it all...

I love his! I will be in the Ozarks in two weeks where I can enjoy the beauty of the fall colors and the changing seasons. LA does not measure up to other regions of the country that have real seasons. Unlike you, I don't year for June. I love the cold and the rain, come what may. Eileen

A hush of a ticking sound from the cockup clock, and a bitter cry of hope, for one more time around, some will survive, maybe us, even, and if so, I shall pass myself around with sharing, a worthwhile journey for the hope of spring, in this life, or the other. I know Peggy and Angelface and all the others will see a bit of spring every day in the goodies I feed them, that then warms my heart and theirs, a warmth that fights the bitter cold of winter and radiates throughout. A wonderfully melancholy write, coming from a touching soul. Bless You Friend! Jasmin Horst

Is it not a sad view of a naked tree, alone, after the grass is gone, and the flowers, and the butterflies and....we will be in front of a fire place drinking hot cocoa as it's there out, alone, not even able to tremble in the cold.
Yes brother you put me in a sad mood.

This is a beautiful write as Sandie said but also filled with such bittersweet images for in order to feel such sadness at the advent of fall means one must have enjoyed one wonderful summer. Also the eternal knowledge that with the spring will again come the summer.

Beautiful write, Ed! You have brought so many great imageries to this poem. Everything is now winding down in the fall, preparing for the winter. Can't really wait for that beautiful white blanket to come upon us, giving feeling of "Peace on Earth."
