"Those who dwell among

The beauties and mysteries of Earth,

Are never alone,

Or weary of life.”

Rachel Carson

A walk through the forest

On a brisk October’s day

A twig snaps off to my left

I very quickly look that way

Suddenly I hear an eerie wail

It now echoes through the air

I stop and I listen intently now

Something’s definitely out there

I eventually spot something in the trees

It may be a deer, or perhaps an old bear

Then it vanishes, in the blink of an eye

Now quite curious, I search everywhere

I find no traces of it at all in the trees

And now, I don’t see another living soul

Then another twig snaps far off to my right

Perhaps it’s The Forest Guardian, quite old

Fantastic tales of this elusive being go back centuries

Many of them are in the oral stories of Native Americans

Called Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and by some, Forest Guardian

Over the years, this creature has been seen again and again

Some anthropologists who have studied this phenomenon

Believe that these beings are descendents of apes from Asia

Others believe they are some type of ancient Neanderthal man

But whatever they may be, they have always filled me with awe

In the high Himalayas, they are known as Abominable Snowmen

In Australia, these elusive beings often referred to as ‘Yowie Man’

Some believe there may be thousands of them still roaming the Earth

And of their legends, lores, and fantastic tales, I have always been a fan

One very disturbing prophetic tale says they are actually ancient messengers

When they’re heard, their pain filled messages are always woefully the same

They warn of impending disasters, and of the destruction of our earthly home

Some ancient cultures believe they try to warn us that we humans are to blame

Yet another walk through the deep forest,

On a very brisk and very eerie October’s day;

A large twig had suddenly snapped off to my left,

Now I wonder what Forest Guardian wants to say.

Ed, thanks for sharing this fine thought-provoking piece. My grandmother believed that they, the Forest Guardians, exist and I really hope they do. Be well my friend.

Sincerely,
Regino

so, ask him what he has to say...Besides that, I don't want man to know all these creatures, all he would end up doing is trying to kill him/her or capture it for study...better they are left alone...Ed

Ed, this reminds me of when I was about nine yrs old I would play in the woods behind our home, only on the outskirts, but one day i went further in and saw a shadow that looked like an indian we called injun Joe, who was known to roam the woods, however he hqd died,so when I told my mother what I saw she said it was him with a "Yowie" spirit, that watches over the woods. Your mentioning the yowie is the first I've seen it since a child(except for children who say it about knee scrapes etc;-)I wish I could read more about them. Thanks for sharing! I love your work!TL

Brother, my two Maori guides/companions in the Victoria mountain ranges in Australia, told me that they hear from the mouth of some very old aborigen wise men that the YowieMan was real and were some part of the deep mountains that they wouldn't go, not for fear of being attacked but out of respect for other men's home.
Maybe we should practice the same, and let the Sasquash in peace, after all we don't "need" to know everything!

Very neat poem, Ed. Well, it cannot be ancient neanderthal men because ancient is back then, and this is now. And it cannot be apes from Asia because Asian apes don't like to walk that far. But I can tell you this, when you are out in the deep forests of southern Washington, you really feel like you are not alone. They say it is the same in the north eastern forests. I would love to meet one.

Well Ed, a suspense filled poem this morning. I am sure The Forest Guardian wants to tell you that we have really screwed up, and Mother Earth is dieing.
It is so sad our state of life right now, both economically, and environmentally

Amazing story/poem I really enjoyed reading this one this morning.
Peace, love, and light,
