A wondrous reunion just took place
Between a soldier and a dog from Iraq
This soldier had rescued this canine
In the desert, in a burning pile of trash
And the bond that had quickly formed
Between this soldier and this dog in Iraq
Made this soldier want to assist this dog
She was determined to bring Ratchet back
Of course, the military now tried to stop her
But thousands of us signed letters and petitions
So, Congress and the military eventually relented
And this dog’s brand new life in America had begun
The dog Ratchet arrived in Minnesota, last October
But this soldier didn’t get home, until this Saturday
And what a truly splendid reunion finally took place
To both soldier, and canine, it was truly a glorious day
These two best friends were finally reunited again on Saturday as this valiant soldier finally returned home, completing her tour of duty; and their joyous reunion made it clear that the bond that helped each of them survive Iraq was mutual.
Rachet the Desert Dog had arrived in Minnesota back in October, after Beberg's efforts, coupled with almost 70,000 people signing petitions and a lot of congressional nudging, prompted military officials to loosen the prohibition on U.S. troops adopting pets.
Family, friends, and supporters all joyously gathered at a VFW Post, to witness their wondrous reunion, as well as to pay tribute to Beberg for her military service.
And since last October, this soldier’s loving parents have been caring for her rescued canine friend, a very feisty, furry substitute for the very valiant daughter they had not seen in person since September 2007.
