“If you want a thing well done,

Do it yourself.”

Charles Spurgeon, 1880

Music: A Cold Day In Hell

I used to do things, myself

Like changing my truck’s oil

But, like so many of us, today

I’d gotten real lazy and spoiled

So, several very long weeks ago, now

I visited a modern ‘quick change’ place

Where they quite eagerly, took my money

And the manager had a big smile on his face

I actually thought that everything was alright

Until about 20 miles along, I heard a big ‘thud’

My old truck came to a clinking, clanking stop

And now, I was stranded, in the roadside mud

The eager young attendant at the ‘quick change’

Had forgotten to tighten my truck’s oil pan plug

My truck’s oil-depleted engine, was now ruined

And I was no longer feeling real joyous or smug

And, it took me several long weeks of very agonizing hell

Before I got this company, to provide me a re-built engine

All this hassle, over this ‘quick change,’ gave me the blues

I’m back to doing things myself – no quick fixes- ever again

And to make matters even worse during this very lengthy ordeal

Someone stole my coins, tools, and jumper cables, from my truck

I guess when you get these dreaded, god-awful, ‘quick fix’ blues

You really get the feeling that, sometimes, you’re ‘sh.t out of luck’

It has also now occurred to me, that millions of people today

Impatiently expect our new President, to give us, a ‘quick fix’

But I think we’re all gonna have to start doing more, ourselves

Or it’s gonna be a hell of a long time, before we drive out of this

Great write and the hard way to learn a lesson as for the new President, I think it is more of the people working with him for any success. Thank you for sharing Ed.

Best poem with a logical analogy I have ever read. And more importantly, it is true.

its a good metaphor Ed, as to the state of this union...

once one of those quick fix oil places forgot to put back on the oil cap...I had oil spraying up onto my windshield...what a mess

Oh boy can I relate to this story. Doesn't anyone realize yet there is no such animal as a quick fix?? All that happens is you just get in deeper and deeper while disillusionment and disappointment grows to an all time high.....

Be always safe,
Karen

I surely do not have so much faith in Obama as some do. We shall see. Fixing things and doing things for ourselves may be the answer after all. Why depend on one person to make things easier for us. Yes, one person is you who can make it easer on yourself. Just do some deep deep thinking and changes and things will go better.

Ed, I hear so many similar stories, and I know it's the lack of ethics in today's generation that do everything too fast, and never give the custom,er a thought.Their minds on what they're going to do when they get off work and that's it!Sorry you had to get robbed besides, that's a real bummer. Thankfully I have a family member who takes care of cars. You're right about doing things ourselves!

Love,
tiger lilly

I used to do Most of my minor auto maintenace myself too
But my reason was becoming a bit disable, old bones are deteriating fast then most, so now me too am paying the price of shaby service
But my car now is easier to oil change then most. the oil filter is on top of the engine, don't have to struggle underneath, except for the release oil plug.... so I be saving myself some money and aggrevation.... as for Our political "change" we askes for it, we made our bed, now we have to sleep on it for "4 More Years of Changes"
Or is that "HELL"
Peace be with you

I was just thinking about you and the Exploder yesterday and wondering what happened after the oil loss problem we talked about...you must have read my mind...sometimes I change my own oil, sometimes I let my neighbor do it, but I always check the plugs tightness no matter who does it...ed

Boy you've got that right, Ed.
It's tough for me to crawl under
the car anymore though lol so... I watch
em like a hawk when they change
my oil, and always pull the dip stick ;)
As far as our 'quick fix' for our mess,
well 'it's gonna be a hell of a long time' no doubt!

I still have someone do my work but I quit one of those quick places because he tried to lie to me about what the computer said I needed. I like your final part about all of us being a part of the "fix" in our present situation. I have seen more people working together in this day. I like it.

I used to go to Wal-Mart for oil changes. No high pressure, just a basic oil change for under 20 bucks. Since I moved I went to a Lube Express for a basic oil change for under 20 dollars..walked out with a bill for 200. I guess I got some things I needed done, like injector cleaning, yada yada... but dang!!!!

This is funny and informative. I like the end, where you point out how people will need to take more responsibility for making things right. In essence, you are not putting down the president for the mess he inherited, but instead asking us to do more. Didn't Kennedy say something like that once, in slightly different words?

Good job, Mr. Ed.

Aaaaawwwww!!!!! That is bad!!! Next time just do it yourself!!!!

My hubby has always been a handyman and mechanically inclined. He can fix everything that needs fixing. including the cars, fridge, CD players, radios....and the list just go on and on. I don't know how he has learned how to fix everything, but my mother-in-law told us that when my hubby was a little boy, everything you give him, he's got to take them apart to see what was inside.

The lesson is: Don't trust others to fix your car, fix it yourself!!!!

Boy this is deep, very deep and very readable, with a cruncher for a finish, did you ever say a mouth full with this one, yes and God helps those, who help themselves, he don't like bystanders either, but let me say, if anyone has ever proven it can be done, you Yanks sure have a knack for it, Obama the good man, might just be a catalyst, unless you have turned into a russian socialist republic, in them few short years, Kennedy, said do not ask, .....
well... boy did you ever say a mouthful, publish it will ya!
