(The Flipside To Yesterday’s Poem - The Watched)

What If, They Really Were There,

In Those Dark Rocky Mountain Caves,

That Night, By That Frozen Waterfall?

What If,

We Are Not Alone, On This Planet,

And We’re Not The Most Intelligent Species,

After All?

§

Sunset was now finally arriving

Over their isolated, ancient home

It was now their favorite time of day

They could finally come out, to roam

They had resided here for countless eons

In their deep, dark, caverns, underground

Humanity, not knowing of their existence

Their ancient secret, had not yet been found

So many hundreds of thousands of years ago

They had foolishly attempted to befriend man

But they had quickly discovered the treachery

Of the Earth species, known as ‘Homo Sapiens’

They had once agreed to meet their distant cousins

For a very epic peace summit, now lost to history

But the human beings had deviously tricked them

They savagely pounced on their brethren, with glee

As the meadow where they had met, for peace

Very quickly ran blood red for Neanderthal Man

The survivors of this carnage, fled underground

Where they still live, according to an ancient plan

They are a very simple and wise ancient species

They take only what they need from Mother Earth

They don’t understand human hatred, greed, and lust

Their peaceful hearts are filled only with love and mirth

Their very sage ancestors decided, a very long time ago

To simply wait very patiently for the annihilation of man

They believe, that eventually, mankind will destroy itself

And they will then reclaim the Earth, to fulfill God’s plan

On this cold winter dusk in the vast Rocky Mountains

As they were once again, eagerly emerging for the night

Urgent warning murmurs quickly arose in the dark caverns

A lone human was spotted outside – filling them with fright

Some of the more curious beings among their kind

Had lingered at the cave entrances for a quick peek

At this lone Homo Sapiens, distant relation, of theirs

Whose visage appeared extremely frightening, not meek

And, as they once again retreated to their vast underground lair

A massive prayer vigil was held, by this ancient Neanderthal clan

“Dearest Heavenly Father Above, Who made all of Earth’s Creation,

We still patiently await the final obliteration, of this creature, called Man.”

Ed you have penned a most thought provoking piece that truly causes shivers to anyone who realized that this can be true, for the arrogant assumption of mankind that we are the best doesn't show in the way we have conducted ourselves up to now, and with each passing day I fear we are getting worse not better, so I pray that those who are not numbered among the presumptious greedy ones, may be able to be numbered along with the ones you write about who are good and live with love and peace! Bravo on a soul stirring write, brother Pee wee!

Sobering thoughts that give the reader pause for reflection, Ed. Thank you. Love and peace,

Well whether it's true or not this certainly affirms some of the recent facts science has discovered about Neanderthal Man that debunks the myths Mr. Home Sapiens created during history:despite his "ferocious appearance" he was a peaceful fruit and vegetable eater, while H.S. was the killer. Whoever Cro-Mag. man was or where he came from, he was always the vicious competitor and so he out-survived initially the huskier N.M. but will he last. Perhaps your story is correct. After we kill ourselves off, maybe Divine Intelligence has a new way for evolution to avoid our mistakes. Like you said, is Neanderthal Man waiting in the wings?
I wouldn't mind, I could live on fruits and veggies.
Interesting topics addressed in your essay poems and stories...
I'll be reading, michael

Ed,

Man is hostile to anything that isn't like him or doesn't understand even if they are of the same species. You tell of these ancient people that escaped Homo Sapien man so well. I followed this story all the way through. Fantastic write.

You are so right, it is not the most intelligent species, it still needs its dirty diapers changed hanging around its soul, and has not grown and become wise, only learned. Seales are being killed by the harvesters as they call them, and the wise ones are watching in dismay, jungles are being denuted, killing our air and wildlife, not one of them we can replace, but baby, is toying with its rattles, rockets to go to Mars, and cannons to kill everything else.
Bless you my friend, a great write! Jasmin Horst
