Our Energy Consumption Shouldn’t Be Taken For Granted
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008, the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 39 countries participating, and 50 million people switching off their lights for an hour. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Coliseum, the Sydney Opera House, and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 Billion Residents of Earth switching off their lights for an hour today, as part of a global vote about our planet’s future energy choices. Unlike any other election, it is not about what country you’re from, or what religion you belong to, or what ethnic background you have; instead, it’s about what planet you’re from, and what you, yourself, hope to do, to improve that planet.
Earth Hour is a symbolic global call to action - a call to stand up, to shut down, to think about our energy choices, and to help our global leaders realize that we all have a stake in the future of this planet. Over 82 countries and territories have already pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is still growing.
You can VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour at 8:30 P.M. local time, and joining the rest of the world for Earth Hour.
Or, you can join the new ‘Anti-Earth Hour’ Group, which is advocating that everyone around the world should turn on every light they have today. They are mocking this symbolic global gesture, since they believe that none of this matters – that one individual never counts for anything, that we are all wasting our time, and that our children’s future, and the very future of this planet, is not in our hands.
Many of them don’t even believe that Climate Change is happening all around us on our planet today, or that it’s adversely affecting all life forms on this planet, or that our energy choices, both today and tomorrow, will matter one bit, in fighting it.

Our lights went out because the government said so, and no counter protest can succeed. Climate change has come and we can feel the summer heat is so intense it hurts the skin. This wasn't what it was years ago when I was young. Summers were hot but not sizzling hot.
And sudden floods in other countries show us there has been a great
change in the make-up of the earth, from melting glaciers to volcanic eruptions that had surpassed frequency since last year. We ruined the earth which God gave us to have dominion on.
