Painting by Michael Sieve,

Entitled ‘Common Loon’

“There is a way that nature speaks,

That the land and water and animals speak;

Most of the time, we are simply not patient enough,

Or quiet enough, to listen to their stories.”

Linda Hogan

My spouse says I’m Loony

And I guess that I truly am

The Loon is my favorite bird

I collect anything ‘Loon’ I can

My home is filled with Loon paintings

I have Loon coffee cups and door mats

I practice on my old ‘Loon Yodel’ flute

My calls truly fascinate my dogs and cats

The Loon is one of Earth’s very oldest birds

They have been around, for 25 million years

And each and every Spring, they return north

I hail their arrival, with fascination and cheers

And each and every Spring, I love watching them

So lovingly preparing their nests, by the lakeshores

Loon infants often hitch a ride on their mother’s back

Loons mate for life, and their children, they do adore

And there is nothing more soul soothing on Earth, to me

Than sitting in a boat, out on a lake, in the pre-dawn mist

Joyously listening for a common loon’s first morning calls

Thankful for this gift of nature which fills my soul with bliss

The Common Loon is one of Earth’s most glorious creatures

And I truly hope that the day never comes, when they are gone

We must help to protect these loons, as we should, all of our birds

For the lakes and forests wouldn’t be the same, without their songs

I love listening to loons when I go camping. At my lake there is these two loons that return to it every year and I truly enjoy seeing them and hearing their calls.I almost bought one of those flutes myself. Great write.

Ed, there is a place in Central Oregon not far from the Pacific Ocean called Loon Lake, isolated, quiet and far from city noise, and home to Loon's coming north for thousands of years. A most beautiful spot.

Cheers,
Dan

I agree with you Ed. The loon is a beautiful bird and who could not be enchanted by their unique call? Thank you for this reminder and lesson. You may want to check out my latest limericks (posted on Friday) and see if you recognize anyone there. Love and peace to you,

Only when the Loon calls, do I really know that I am on a lake, yes and to our Georg who well, yes it dives too!

Ab-so-loonly wonderfuly written poem to the loon, dear Ed! My only remembrance of the loon's song is in movie "Anatomy of a Murder" (I bought the DVD and watch every year :o) I would envy your having these "songs" to hear, but I have many other birds singing to me each morning in anticipation of my feeding them...what a beautiful world we have...and should protect.
Blessings and Love - Micke

Ed,

Nature is such a beautiful thing we take for granted, be it a loon, a peacock or any part of life. You've described this so beautifully.

Wonderful poem on the loon, I got photos of them from a friend and they are beautiful. I think any bird's song in the morning is like symphony,

it ushers in the unfolding of a new day. Great piece of refreshing writing.

They are beautiful birds and I've seen paintings of them from many years past that tell me how much others appreciate their beauty. Excellent poem.

I thought for a moment you were talking of you-know-who! Be happy that Mean Tall Woman like to see those birds, because if you had another kind of birds...you have gonna out on your ear long ago.
If you need help, ask the Birds Whisperer Jasmin, I am too old to go chasing birds with feathers or without!
