“It is a wholesome and necessary thing

For us to turn again, to the Earth,

And in contemplation of her beauties,

To know of wonder and humility.”

Rachel Carson

The forest is my classroom

I often study in it, all day

Its teachers, are magnificent

Edifying me, in so many ways

I heard one of them singing

At dusk, just the other night

A fabulous forest instructor

Whose song, is sheer delight

“Teacher, Teacher, Teacher!”

Now called out this tiny feathered bird

He had just arrived from South America

Another sign of Spring, to hear his words

He and his mate will now build their nest

On the thick forest floor, amidst the trees

And soon, I heard his mate return his call

“Teacher, Teacher!” rang out in the breeze

This tiny migratory bird is called an Oven Bird

Since the nests they build, resemble Dutch ovens

Hopefully, these tiny teachers will remain here now

Until the warm weather of the Summer, finally ends

The many birds and animals of the northern forest

Have been educating me, since my early childhood

They truly are magnificent and inspiring instructors

Teaching all who care to listen about Nature’s Good

And this tiny sage Oven Bird,

Really does joyously sing out,

‘Teacher, Teacher, Teacher,’

He’s enlightened me, no doubt.

Seems unsafe for them to build their nests on the forest floor, but I guess they know better than I, by a long shot, what is and what isn't safe...ed

Isn't the sound of nature so reassuring and enlightening. I just love spring, it is so energetic and full of new life.
Wonderful poem to put me in a spring like mood.
Peace, love, and light,

This is an excellent nature poem, Ed. I listen to the birds outside, too, when I'm working in the yard and like your tiny friends who sing out "teacher" some of the birds speak to me. They sound so much like real words being chirped sometimes.
