“The bat, that flits at close of Eve,

Has left the brain, that won’t believe;

The owl, that calls upon the Night,

Speaks, the Unbeliever’s fright.”

William Blake

A restless night

My mind is awake

Something is wrong

And sleep won’t take

My dogs are also restless

Some of my cats are too

Something must be amiss

Maybe we have the blues

Suddenly, we all hear it

Tapping, on our window

Canines, felines, and man

All to the window, now go

The night is dark and deep

None of us can see a thing

But something, is out there

We hear fluttering of wings

And soon, we hear him calling

A wise old owl, at my window

He stares so deeply into my soul

Then off on wing, he silently goes

His image, remains in my mind

Since he peered, directly at me

This bird is called a Ghost Owl

A creature that’s quite legendary

This wondrous old night caller

Doesn’t fill any of us, with fright

But we do wonder, what he wanted

Calling on us, in the deep of the night

Did he have some urgent tidings

That he felt he needed to convey

Or, was he just resting for a moment

Before heading off on his winged way

Something that I’ll be contemplating today;

Nature moves me, in so many different ways.

A wondering expierence ! There are two owls that sit on a bare branched pine tree in the woods near our home. Many nights we hear their plaintive voices echoing thru the woodland...M

What a wonderful experience for you, Ed. Methinks there is a reason and meaning to the Night Caller visit. Another adventure I'm so glad you share with us...as only you can!

am always amazed at the faces of Owls, how truly wise and aloof they seem to be and almost majestic like royalty of the winged kingdom.

Goosebumps. I too awoke in the middle of the night last night. I sprung up as if it were dawn and also heard an owl outside my window. Reminds me of the song, "Wildfire". Love this write, Ed. Saved! There are harbingers all around us but it's left to us to decipher nature's mysteries...Lin

A captivating write indeed, a bit mystical and one that stirs the heart and curiosity. Nothing like nature to revive one, make one feel alive! Enjoyed this very much my friend.

What a magnificent sight he was! To see an owl that way is so fantastic, it is a rare chance. Lovely narrative of your encounter with that "night caller".

I'm glad you like things that fly. Here's my favorite for your Blake collection:

How do you know but every bird
that wings the airy way,
Is an enormous world of delight,
Closed to your senses five?

The first time I ever saw an owl was just before my father passed away four years ago. We were sitting out in my parent's backyard in Ocala, Florida, and my father looked up and pointed and there were two! Both sitting on a branches of different trees, but above one another... it's something that I'll never forget.

I knew you'd like him,
So him to you I sent,
When he poops on your car,
Like your birds did to mine,
Consider it a message from me, & don't about it, whine...Ed

Ed, so many tales, legends, superstitions, and yet, we can't call off that atavistic feeling from way back our forefathers that believe that the bird was coming with a warning, message, omen and what you have.
Others pointed to the crow, the vultures or the bats.
Buy I remember before throwing the child with the bath water that there are more thing between sky and earth than we are willing to believe.
