“It is good to be alone in your garden at dawn or dark,

So that all its presences may haunt you and possess you,

In a reverie of suspended thought.”

James Douglas

I'd been out in my trusty old workshop

Organizing my supplies, for planting day

When I came upon this one old Mason jar

It brought a flood of memories, right away

Suddenly, I was about five or six years old

And I was in Mr. Hoenig’s Hardware Store

My grandmother had sent me for Mason jars

“It looks like your Grandma needs some more!”

My grandmother never had enough of these jars

She canned and preserved, so many delicious things

Fruits, and vegetables, and cucumbers, from her garden

She canned in the fall, but began gathering jars, each spring

One of my greatest joys was helping her in the old canning shed

Row upon row of Mason jars, filled with mouth watering delights

Helping her plant her garden each spring, was always so memorable

And after the fall canning, such delectable food, for cold winter nights

I had been out in my trusty old workshop,

Organizing all my supplies, for planting day;

When I came upon this treasured old Mason jar,

It brought such wondrous memories to me, right away.

Dear Ed , I really enjoyed your trip down memory lane. It brought back lots of great childhood memories. I also learned to can and make jams and jellies when I was in my late teens soon after I had my first son. i think we used mason jard back then..Thats another story to write at a later time...I liked this one so much! Thanks for sharing.....M

My grandmother used to have a jar like that, she got it from the American soldiers from World War II and it's still with my 87 year old aunt. She used to make caramelized mangoes and stored them in those.
Very nice poem Mr. Ed.

This brought back memories of when I was much younger when my granny and mom canned. I still have those jars along all the memories stored in a neat row.

It always amazes me how such simple things (as your mason jar) can trigger such vivid and wonderful memories of our past. I recently was at a recreated fifties village and in the school house I saw one of the brown leather school bags we had as children and I just stood there with my fingers on it as wave after wave of young memories enveloped me. So yes I can relate to your Mason Jar memories.

Hi Mr. Ed
The art of canning is an item on my bucket list. From all accounts, it's a very rewarding undertaking. Your words have prompted me to find some recipes. Thanks and be well. Liz

I learned to can from my grandmothers, who always put away good food. I used to do this in the seventies, bake bread too. I've frozen and dried fruit but i, buy vegies at the local farmer's market but in this day and age it's time to get back to gardening and preserving! Hope I have a garden space when I move. Thank you for bringing back great memories, Ed. Love this write and the quote, too...

Brings back memories of my maternal Grandma's many filled Mason jars in her dirt cellar. Many a meal made all the more delictable with veggies and fruits (not to forget the home-made mincemeat for pies!) from those jars! Thanks for the memory-reminders, Ed.

PEE-WEE - Grand Walk down 'Memory Lane' !!!

ED-vard says he's 'proper'? Referring to the use of those fine ole jars as URINALS?
Did come in handy on a long drive though!

MY Grandma, Aunts, and neighbors were all 'Home-bodies' is those old days -

JARS - peaches - pears - tomatoes - stringbeans - corn - YUM!

Years ago, our extended family used to go to an abandoned estate of peach orchards -
picked basketfuls all day - back home, blanched them, removed skins, added a powder - ascorbic acid, I think - to preserve - filled mason jars. When we ran out of them, used zip-lock freezer bags - YUM ... fresh peaches smothering vanilla icecream, in the dead of winter - YUM!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! Tom.

I feel from these type of writes you do so well, that I may have missed something, not having more than an "every so often" relationship with my grandmother...other than making the best tapioca pudding, i wonder what other things she could have done...good memories...Ed

Hi Mr. Ed, this really brings back memories for me... my mother and grandmothers, that's what they did, it was how they/we survived back in the day. When there was nothing, Mom would go out in the back woods and shoot a deer just so we would have something to eat. Couldn't tell anyone though... thank you for the memories...

Beautiful memories. Canning in those old Mason jars is a hobby for lots of people now adays; however, back then those old jars held food for the long winter months when the land lay fallow. Interesting write, Ed.
