Another Walk In The Wood

“As you sit on a steep hillside,

Or lie prone under the trees of a forest,

Or sprawl wet-legged by a mountain stream,

The great door, that does not look like a door, opens.”

Stephen Graham

Another rainy spring day

Another walk in the wood

A place I go to, for serenity

A place, where I still feel good

This time, I walk here all alone

No dogs are with me this morn

I don’t want them to be startling

These two tiny forest newborns

Eventually, I spot their mother

By her side, her two young fawn

The rain, doesn’t bother any of us

On this delightful, rainy day dawn

This female deer already recognizes me

And she realizes that I mean them no harm

I stand and I gaze in wonder at her children

On a rainy spring morn, bursting with charm

Eventually, I head off down the path

Making my way in the rain, to my car

Although it’s not a very long distance

In my heart, I know I’ve journeyed far

Another warm, rainy, spring day,

Yet another walk, out in the wood;

A place, I can still find some serenity,

A place to me, that still feels very good.

I'd love to take this walk with you. Ther is nothing like walking in the woodlands enjoying all nature has to offer. I could see the deer as you described them...Hope they'll be ok.....M

I walk a mile a day, not deep in the woods, but in a fairly wild area bordering my home. I do that with my border collie and I know exactly what what your walk in the woods feels like. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I think they like the serenity, too. They always seem so startled by the ruckus humans make. They come through my yard a lot. Turkeys, too. Love how you went in there all calm and quiet to see them. A great sense of respect for wildlife in this poem. Great writing:)

you really capture that sense of awe and wonder, Dad, with your sentiment about "journeying far"... that's it in a nutshell. Whenever I've been privileged to an intimate view such as you describe here, I feel like I've been to the moon and back again, such is the "window on another world". How blessed are the eyes that can see and appreciate such sightings! Totally wonderful, thank you. Kate xx

Great piece, Ed, I was recently
in the high country and had a similar
experience with a couple of deer, they
just continued to graze and were not
bothered by me at all...

Another times, another outdoors, but got the same feeling when confronted with wild life that recognized you weren't a treat to them.
How they knew?
How they knew?

Hi Mr. Ed, you not only write your journey, you live it, as we all should. When in touch with our natural surroundings, we will know when we have journeyed beyond for nature teaches us...much to learn, eh?

In Spirit,
Bear
