“I still find each day too short

For all the thoughts I want to think,

All the walks I want to take,

All the books I want to read,

And all the friends I want to see.”

John Burroughs

I recently took a nostalgic trip

Back to my old neighborhood

The very place where I grew up

A place to me, that was very good

I parked in front of our old homestead

What marvelous memories, came to mind

Of my family, friends, and very loyal old pets

In my mind, a nostalgic movie began to unwind

I suddenly pictured my old dog, Tiger, in the window

Lovingly waiting there, for me to return home from school

Then, I pictured my grandmother, sending me across the street

To the tiny old hardware store, a place I had thought so very cool

I eventually headed off down the street, towards our old parish church

The door was unlocked, so I headed inside, and silently sat in a back row

My mind wandered back to all the weddings and funerals I’d attended here

Of so many relatives and friends and people in this neighborhood I had known

As I was getting up to leave, I noticed another person, now entering the church’s door

He somehow looked familiar, and as I approached him, he smiled, and held out his hand

An old childhood friend, who was also feeling nostalgic, was on a similar journey that day

We walked over to a familiar neighborhood pub for a trip back through time that was grand

I now find each day much too short

For all the thoughts I want to think,

All the walks that I still want to take,

All the books that I still want to read,

All the places that I still want to visit,

And all the old friends I still want to see.

What were the odds of meeting an old friend? One hundred percent. Somethings were meant to be. Thanks for sharing memories. Patrick

What a warm and beautiful peek into what once was real. It is fun to do once in a while especially when you begin to remember all the wonderful people, some of who are no longer around, but we remember, therefore they are still with us...

Be always safe,
Karen

Hi Mr. Ed, It's a good thing that it was a good place for you to go back to. So many can't say that, not just because of the changes over time. Thank you for sharing a part of your life...

Ed, the wonderful thing about your poem is that it could happen not just in your old neighborhood, but any place in the world, our memories will take us. Nice writing.

Dan

I've always considered myself lucky, in that I can return to the town I grew up in whenever I wanted to...whereas people who were born and raised inner city wise "could" do so, but the old neighborhoods had changed so much...good for you that you can still "go home" & find some peace and memories...Ed
