There is a place in the northwood I like to go
When I need to re-connect with Mother Earth
A place of wondrous beauty and ancient legends
A place that enlightens and provides me a re-birth
It’s a place we call the Boundary Waters Area
A place that separates Minnesota from Canada
A place where I like to camp and fish and think
And study rock drawings which fill me with awe
The ancient picture above has always fascinated me
It depicts a wolf, a moose, canoes, a star, and a man
To me, it symbolizes that ancient man was very wise
He knew all things were connected in Creator’s plan
In one of the very ancient Ojibwe Indian creation stories
Myeengun, The Wolf, was sent to teach man, many things
Wolf showed him how to hunt moose, and survive in the wild
He even gave him one of his teeth, as a flint, and fire, he did bring
Wolf also became one of man’s best friends, and his spiritual guide
And he helped we humans to journey in our death canoes, to Paradise
Yet today, most have forgotten how all things on Earth are truly connected
Most would rather annihilate creatures like the wolf; a blindness fills their eyes
Legends like these are one reason I’m a fan of the wolf,
Who is the noble ancestor of dog, today man’s best friend;
I’ve always believed that all life on this Earth is connected,
And that we should protect its life, not try to hasten its end.
There is a place in the northwood I like to go,
When I need to re-connect with Mother Earth;
A place of natural beauty and ancient legends,
A place that enlightens and provides me a re-birth.
