He was a young valiant U.S. soldier
Who had served so very honorably in Iraq
But his life changed, and it became a nightmare
One day on patrol, after being wounded in an attack
He began to fear crowds, and to drink himself to sleep
He lost interest in his friends, and he considered suicide
The VA prescribed strong pain killers, for his back injury
And other drugs, for the anxiety and depression in his mind
Like so many other veterans with PTSD, his wife left him
He withdrew to a small apartment, and his life was in decline
But luckily, he learned about a program for veterans like him
And his savior was a dedicated new friend, a wondrous canine
Soon, he met Tuesday, a Psychiatric Service Dog
Who was trained as a Seeing Eye Dog, For the Mind
He now lives with, and cares for, this vet with PTSD
He’s a most reliable furry friend, of the very best kind
Tuesday now listens for the alarm on this veteran’s wristwatch
And, he makes sure that his human friend takes his daily medication
He now accompanies him to the movie theater, and to therapy sessions
He sleeps with him, and knows his moods, and helps his nightmares end
On a recent afternoon, the vet and the dog walked to a subway station
The crowd was enormous, and the dog knew the vet was under stress
So Tuesday quickly created a buffer between his master and the crowd
As they boarded the train, the vet whispered to the dog, “You’re the Best!”
Puppies Behind Bars Inc., a nonprofit organization
That utilizes prison inmates to train service animals,
Has now placed psychiatric-service dogs with 11 veterans,
And it hopes to provide 14 more this year.
